Music icon Elton John revealed his deteriorating eye sight with fans at the end of last year as they have now been given a warning ahead of the release of his new album
Sir Elton John has shared a devastating health update that has left him unable to do one thing for fans anymore.
The music icon, 77, opened up on his eyesight deterioration last year in a heartbreaking confession. He decided to share his health concern with fans in December while attending a production of The Devil Wears Prada on London’s West End, alongside his husband David Furnish. During a speech following the production, he admitted to the audience: “I’ve lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage.”
An eye infection last summer caused him to lose the eyesight in his right eye, and he also admitted his left eye is not good either, confessing he felt “stuck” at the moment. Elton’s condition has sadly worsened as fans were given a warning that the I’m Still Standing hitmaker had to make a huge change for the release of his new album.
He feared his sight may have prevented him from finishing Who Believes in Angels?, yet the album is set to be released next month on April 4. However, Elton has been forced to make a devastating decision when it comes to the release of the new music. He has sold £24.99 limited edition sets of the album, which includes a signature from the star.
Yet, in a heartbreaking move Elton has “simplified” his usual signature to feature only his first initial E followed by a kiss, according to the Sun. Back in December, Elton, who is dad to sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, revealed his eye condition for the first time. He told theatregoers: “I’ve lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage. As some of you may know I have had issues and now I have lost my sight.
“I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it. To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews… it’s hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight OK. It’s been a while since I’ve done anything, and well, I just have to get off my backside.
“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest. So there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but it’s… I’m kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do something like this (an interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.”
Earlier this month, the music legend made an emotional revelation on BBC’s The Graham Norton Show, where he appeared with collaborator Brandi Carlile to promote their upcoming track Who Believes In Angels?. Elton confessed that he “lost it” and needed comforting for 45 minutes when the new song made him confront his own mortality.
“Bernie Taupin (Elton’s lyricist) gave me a lyric for a song called, ‘When This Whole World Is Done With Me’, and I’m writing the verse (music) quite quickly, and I think this is a really lovely verse,” Elton recalled. “And then I get to the chorus, and I find that it’s about my death, my demise. And as a 76 year old man, which I was at that time, and having children and having a husband, mortality, and you think about, ‘How long have I got? How long? I hope I’ve got, much longer than maybe I’ve got.
“And so by the time I got to the chorus and suddenly realised that I started singing it (and) I lost it for 45 minutes. It was a very, very heavy moment for me,” he admitted. “After 45 minutes of being consoled, I was okay, but I recorded the next day…when you’re singing about being washed out to sea and the end of your life, it took me by surprise.”
