Mykonos and Santorini are two of the most popular Greek islands for tourists – but some visitors think that the islands are way too crowded and expensive
Santorini and Mykonos are the epitome of Greek island charm for many – with their quintessential whitewashed buildings, iconic blue-domed churches and stunning beaches – attracting legions of holidaymakers annually.
Yet some travellers find these idyllic isles far too busy with visitors to truly appreciate. One such tourist shared on Reddit: “My experience in Mykonos wasn’t great. Everything is super expensive including the food. Please do research on visiting another island instead. Mykonos is the biggest tourist trap of all. Santorini comes next but it’s better.”
This particular visitor was so disenchanted by their experience that they now caution others against multi-island Greek adventures, suggesting a one-island-only approach to avoid disappointment. Another visitor voiced a similar sentiment: “The other islands in the Cyclades are amazing. Mykonos and Santorini are like Disneyland and Las Vegas.

“Fake. Expensive. They’ve been ruined by tourist prices for everything and Instagram influencers. Smaller islands each have their own vibe.”
Even though Mykonos and Santorini might be among the more budget-friendly Greek islands when it comes to travel costs from the UK, upon arrival, expenses can soar.
Agreeing with this viewpoint, a user remarked: “I would agree completely on Mykonos. Am never going back. Santorini was expensive for drinks but you could still get affordable food.”
Opinions on Mykonos weren’t unanimously negative though, reports the Express. Defending the island, one person said: “I enjoyed Mykonos. Super expensive and touristy but the old town is beautiful.
“Also there are a lot of cool art galleries and that sort of thing. I think people love to hate on Mykonos but it’s popular for a reason and I’m glad I visited.”
Heading to Mykonos outside the bustling peak season might just be the ticket for tourists looking to dodge the summer throngs.
One holidaymaker shared their experience, saying: “I went to Mykonos in late September and had a great experience. Nearly everyone I met was delightful and friendly, locals and tourists alike.
“The beaches were lovely and very nice for swimming. It was easy to travel to and around with young children.”
