Liverpool need to regroup after a disappointing week where Arne Slot’s side lost to Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain to leave a Premier League title win as the only chance for glory
After a nightmare week, Liverpool have one remaining ambition for the rest of the season.
The Reds still hold a healthy lead at the top of the Premier League after facing devastating defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United, that saw Champions League and Carabao Cup dreams end. Arne Slot’s first season can still end with a title however, with a 12-point advantage in the top flight.
The Dutchman’s side have some time to reflect and to overcome a difficult week, as much of the squad head around the world on international duty. Everton await upon their return.
Reflection has already seen people begin to theorise what Liverpool need to do to improve next term. With that said, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news and rumours around the club.
Frimpong contact
Liverpool are in regular contact with Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong, per Sport Bild. The Dutchman is said to be eyeing a move the summer with a number of clubs interested.
The wing-back is reported to have a £33.7million release clause in his contract and the Reds have maintained contact with the player. Arne Slot is said to have highlighted his support over a deal last summer.
Frimpong has offered four goals and 11 assists from the right flank in 2024/25, including one of each against Stuttgart this past weekend. The likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City could offer competition for his signature, while the 24-year-old is claimed to prefer a move to England.
Kerkez talks
Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez is set to meet with his agents to discuss his future this week, according to reports. The 20-year-old is to debate his options amid interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
The left-back is under contract until 2028 but has emerged as a top target for the Reds after making a positive impression for the Cherries. It is claimed while Bournemouth want to keep the young star, there is a degree of acceptance that he will depart in the summer.
Kerkez is said to have been the subject of attention from Anfield for almost a year, with the Reds keeping in close contact with his camp.
Van Dijk message
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called upon his team-mates to realise the hard work that will be required to ensure a Premier League title arrives at Anfield this term. The Dutchman delivered his blunt message after his side failed against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final and does not want to be complacent despite a 12-point lead over Arsenal.
But Van Dijk said: “Yeah, but for me personally, there shouldn’t be extra motivation. You play for the biggest prize that you work so hard for from the start of the season when no-one expected us to be challenging for, first and foremost, the Premier League, one of the biggest prizes, and then on the side of that all the other trophies.
“Obviously the Champions League we couldn’t get it done, this we lost and the FA Cup we got knocked out. We have nine games to go and I don’t think there’s any motivation needed to try to get the job done.
“What is needed is that we have to realise there is hard work and and still a job to do. Each one of us, including the guys that maybe don’t play as much, guys out of the squad or the young boys, our fans, so nine games to go.”
