Detectives have now launched a murder probe following the grim discovery in Prestwich, Greater Manchester – with the elderly victim found to have sustained injuries deemed suspicious, police said
A 70-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found dead inside a house in Manchester.
Detectives from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team have now launched a murder probe following the grim discovery in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. The 84-year-old man’s body was found last Thursday, March 13. The elderly victim was found to have sustained injuries deemed suspicious, according to investigations and a Home Office post mortem. Police then attended a scene on Butterstile Lane in Prestwich at around 7pm on Tuesday, March 18, where they arrested a 70-year-old woman on suspicion of murder.
She remains in custody to be questioned by detectives. Police confirmed the victim and suspect are both known to each other. A cordon has been placed around the property and crime scene investigators (CSI) remained at the house overnight and throughout Wednesday morning as detectives worked to gather evidence.

Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson from GMP’s Major Incident Team said: “We understand the concern this news will raise within Bury that we have launched a murder investigation, but I would like to reassure the local community our initial enquiries suggest it is a contained incident with no wider threat to the public.
“As part of our investigation we must follow strict procedure and ensure we obtain as much evidence as possible to understand more what happened which has sadly led to an elderly man losing their life.”
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “Detectives from our Major Incident Team have launched a murder investigation after the body of an 84-year-old man was sadly found at his home address on Thursday 13 March 2025. After initial enquiries and a Home Office Post-mortem, the injuries sustained were deemed to be suspicious.
“Last night (Tuesday 18 March 2025) at around 7pm on Butterstile Lane in Prestwich, Bury, a 70-year-old woman who was known to the victim was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.”
Bury South MP Christian Wakeford has expressed his sympathy for the incident and the loved ones of the victim. He said: “Absolutely devastated to hear of the passing of an elderly constituent in Prestwich in these circumstances.
“I’ll be liaising with the police and supporting them and any concerned constituents at this difficult time. I await further details on the conclusion of GMP’s investigation.”
