As the spring season blossoms, Britons are on the hunt for last-minute escapes that won’t empty their wallets. A recent study has handpicked some of the UK’s best spots for a cosy weekend retreat that promises good value.

Aqua, the credit card company, examined factors like accommodation costs, monthly Google searches, average rainfall, and typical temperature to rank the top budget-friendly staycation destinations.

Topping the list is Plymouth, hailed as the most affordable choice among sought-after cities, where couples can enjoy a weekend away for a mere £65.

The city’s celebrated waterfront boasts the historic Royal William Yard, a former naval powerhouse transformed into chic boutiques, eateries, and art venues.

The National Marine Aquarium offers visitors a spellbinding dive into the English Channel’s marine wonders in a setting that delights both kids and adults.

History buffs will appreciate the Mayflower Steps, the departure point of the Pilgrims journeying to America in 1620, lending Plymouth a touch of historical significance.

A short trip from Plymouth lies Dartmoor National Park, embodying Devon’s rural charm, perfect for Sunday strolls and wildlife spotting.

Plaudits for this captivating city frequently feature on Tripadvisor, with one user proclaiming it “UK’s most wonderful city”.

Reviewer Eunny was full of praise, saying: “I have travelled to most cities in the UK and Plymouth is by far the best! Barbican seafront and harbour is beautiful, UK’s version of San Diego.”

Mum39 shared her experience: “Lots of boat trips, good walking, and buses to get you around when hills become hard work!”.

She also noted the local dining scene and urban regeneration: “Numerous cafes to suit every taste, and excellent development going on at Royal William Yard bringing old buildings back to life.”

CharlotteFoxy couldn’t help but gush about the city: “Such a gorgeous place to be, if you love nature and quiet seaside towns then I cannot recommend Plymouth more!! Wouldn’t hesitate to go back!”.

The article also mentioned other top-rated cities, with Blackpool securing the second spot, while Portsmouth came in third, offering weekend getaways for £69 and £73 respectively.
