Banish moss from patios for good with £2 staple found in the fridge

By staff8 April 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Just in time for the summertime, experts have revealed another kitchen staple that works like wonders when trying to get rid moss from the patios, and it doesn’t cost a fortune.

Moss and algae can make our garden spaces slippery and dangerous, and it can be quite difficult to get it off once it has spread. But, there’s one way to prevent it from growing back and it doesn’t cost a fortune – and – you can find it in your local supermarket or convenience store.

Now that the weather has got warmer, it’s the best time to undertake some gardening tasks and ensure that outdoor spaces are looking as neat and tidy in preparation for the hotter months. According to Net Mums, there’s one household item that will banish moss from patios for good. Do you drink cola?

Moss thrives in damp and shaded areas, mostly found under the garden furniture. Although it doesn’t damage an outdoor space, it can make them look grubby and most importantly, become a safety hazard. During the winter months, because of the moisture kept on the moss, it can lead to people slipping and injuring themselves. This simple and cost-effective method will keep your garden surfaces safe, clean, and moss-free, ensuring they look their best year-round.

How to get rid of moss from patios?

Moss requires constant moisture to survive, which is why using Coca-Cola can be an unexpected but effective solution. To do so, simply pour the soft drink directly onto the moss patches.

The acid in the drink, which is known as phosphoric acid, helps degrade the moss, making it much easier to scrub it using a garden brush. Although it might not give the results instantly, it will make the green fade away – which means that the moss is dying. It’s also recommended to do this during a sunny day and in the morning, so the moss has more time to dry out.

Once done and a few days have gone by when it looks brown, remove the moss using a hard bristled brush and spray the area with a garden hose.

In addition to using cola, there are several other alternatives that can help remove moss from patios. These include white vinegar and liquid detergent. These household items are also effective and inexpensive alternatives for dealing with moss growth. By completing this task, gardeners can ensure their patios remain tidy and well-maintained for the months ahead. Tackling it now will also help prevent or slow the build-up of moss in the coming seasons, particularly when rain and humidity conditions create the perfect environment for moss to thrive.
