Tinder users can now flirt with AI to try and make them better at dating

Tinder has come up with a new interactive app called The Game Game which allows users to practise their flirting skills by talking to an AI robot before shooting their shot with a potential partner

It might have been announced on April Fools, but Tinder’s new AI dating game is no joke. The new interactive feature allows users to assess their flirting skills, aiming to make users be better at dating and how to master the first steps into a flirtatious conversation that could lead to a potential date.

Using AI bots like ChatGPT and Open AI isn’t anything new and as young people get more used to the idea of chatting with a robot, Tinder is using this phenomenon to attract more customers. The Game Game, Tinder’s AI feature, allows users to flirt with AI bots to practice their flirting skills and get feedback on how they’re doing before testing their skills in the ‘real world’.

The Game Game creates a ‘meet cute’ scenario – like the ones in the Korean dramas – with users using their natural charms to communicate and attract AI-characters. The goal of Tinder’s ‘game’ is to make flirting less intimidating and more fun, allowing users to practise their flirting skills in an environment where they aren’t pressured. It also encourages users to boost their confidence and express themselves more comfortably with potential partners they meet on the app.

Alex Osborne, Sir., Director of Product Innovation at Match Group commented: “This project gave us a chance to experiment with how AI can make dating a little more fun and a little less intimidating.”

“We worked with OpenAI to create something that’s light-hearted but rooted in real tech—blending personality, feedback, and just enough playfulness to keep people on their toes,” he added.

The Game Game isn’t the only feature the dating app has introduced. In 2024, Tinder launched the AI photo selector tool, where users were getting their best pictures chosen as to what was more likely for other users to “swipe right.”

How does Tinder’s The Game Game work?

When users tap the Tinder logo in the top left corner of the screen to enter The Game Game experience, an AI persona based on the age range and gender of what they’re interested in. After a scenario is created, the AI begins the conversation.

The conversations are vocally, meaning that users have to go out of their comfort zone and test their flirting skills, in order to secure a date by the end of the session. Depending on how the scenario unfolds, it can either end smoothly or take an unpredictable turn.

Once done, the AI bot will offer real-time feedback based on the experience, telling users whether they’re making progress or not. Users also get feedback on moments that negatively affect their conversation, as well as how to avoid those in the future. Scored on a three-flame scale, the more charm and humour a person brings into the conversation, the more likely they are to earn full marks. Users can also save their scores and share them with their friends to show off how good – or bad – their flirting skills are.

Sara Cladwell, Head of Go-To-Market Readiness at OpenAI also said: “We’re continuing to work with platforms like Tinder that are deploying OpenAI thoughtfully in their products to help people build practical skills and confidence.”

“With Realtime API, Tinder is using AI to build fun, engaging experiences with the clear intention of enabling real-world connections and making dating a little less scary,” she added.
