Conor Benn’s dad immediately shut down after boast about Chris Eubank Jr fight

Nigel Benn was proud of what he saw from his son in training and even remarkably claimed he made a super-middleweight champion quit – but those comments have been brutally shut down

William Scull’s promoter Ingo Volckmann has brutally hit back at claims Conor Benn made his star client quit in sparring.

Nigel Benn recently detailed all about his son’s sparring sessions ahead of his upcoming showdown with Chris Eubank Jr. The British boxing legend revealed that Denzel Bentley, Bruno Surace and Scull – the IBF super-middleweight champion – all stepped in to help ‘The Destroyer’ in Majorca.

The 61-year-old has been by his son’s side every step of the way ahead of the blockbuster dust-up in north London on Saturday night. ‘The Destroyer’ has spent most of his career at welterweight, but will be stepping up two weight classes to take on Eubank Jr, and that’s reflected in his training preparations.

Benn has kept quiet about his training camp, but his father was quick to praise his son’s success in the gym and even went as far as saying Scull quit in sparring. His comments were quick to spread across social media – with Volckmann himself now responding with his own version of the events. He told iFL TV: “The father of Conor Benn said they got good sparring against Scull. Scull couldn’t (do more than) eight rounds. You know why? Because we said eight rounds. We said we make one minute stop, because it was our first sparring. He was already doing some sparring.

Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn will face off on Saturday, April 26, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Fans can order the fight on DAZN PPV for £19.95, which also comes with a DAZN seven-day free trial.

“So we said eight rounds, we made eight rounds. I really have to laugh. Show it in the ring that your son had a good one… Even if it was (how he said), nobody speaks about this. Sportsmanship.” The promoter’s comments came after Benn detailed all at Thursday’s final press conference.

“You know the saying, ‘what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?’ Well, what happened in Majorca, I’m telling. First he started sparring with Denzel Bentley. He’s a super-middleweight but really at light heavyweight now and he had his hands full with Conor. Conor did 10 rounds easy. Then he was sparring the guy who knocked out Munguia, Bruno Surace, another light-heavy. Conor was bullying him around. Then to put the cherry on top he started sparring a guy called William Scull, an IBF champion, who is fighting Canelo a week after Conor.”

He said: “In the first four rounds, him and Conor were even-stevens and they were saying ‘perfecto!’ every time he hit Conor. Then in about round five, he said ‘no no no’ because Conor only has 40 seconds rest in between rounds. Then what he was doing in between the rounds, he was sitting on the ropes. Then in rounds five, six and seven he was starting to feel the pace. This was William Scull the IBF champion.

“Then round eight came and me and Tony [Sims] looked at each other and thought he just quit, he just stopped. He couldn’t take no more after eight rounds, we were meant to do 10. My little boy just damaged the IBF world champion and I am so confident this don’t go past four rounds. Nobody has seen him for the last two or three years, oh my gosh, you are in for a big big treat, mark my words.”

With Benn preparing to take on Eubank Jr on Saturday night, Scull himself is also in the final stages of his respective training camp. The 32-year-old faces his toughest test yet and is set to take on Canelo Alvarez on May 3 for the undisputed crown at 168 pounds.
