Arne Slot has often cut a cool, calm figure as Liverpool boss but there was one instance where he let rip at his players despite them dominating the Premier League
Liverpool boss Arne Slot absolutely let rip at his players at half-time when they played Southampton back in March. The Reds held a commanding lead at the top of the Premier League but were losing to the side sitting bottom of the table.
Will Smallbone had given the visitors at shock lead at Anfield with Slot sitting in the stands as he observed a two-match touchline ban. Plenty around the country had all but declared Liverpool as champions such was their lead and Arsenal’s inconsistency below them.
Slot though wasn’t resting on his laurels and, after the half-time whistle, marched down to the home dressing room before slamming the door shut and laying down the law. So often known for his composure, the Dutchman decided to tell his players exactly what he was thinking.
He lamented their lack of intensity, reports the Athletic. Slot felt that with and without the ball the entire team were way off the standards he demanded and let them know as his show of frustration resonated with all of those in the dressing toom.
One senior person at the club said: “The reason it was so effective was because it was so out of character for Arne. It was the angriest anyone had seen him.”

Liverpool managed to turn the tide in the second-half as they avoided an embarrassing home defeat, which allowed them to retain their lead at the summit. Darwin Nunez equalised before Mohamed Salah scored two penalties to seal a 3-1 victory.
Slot said afterwards: “I didn’t give them compliments at half-time, I can tell you. Maybe it was because I was sitting up there instead of being at the line because I know from experience, not that I’ve been suspended before, that when you watch a game over there, you always feel like, ‘Maybe I can even play in this game’.”
Slot was clearly seeing some warning signs, which would bear fruit the following week. Just days later, PSG came to Anfield and knocked the Reds out of the Champions League, ending their treble hopes. Then Newcastle produced a shock to down Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
All eyes were then left on the league but Liverpool have rallied and, since losing at Wembley, they’ve won four of their five games. Sunday’s 5-1 win over Tottenham secured the title and meant Slot became just the fifth manager to win the Premier League at the first time of asking.
