A huge power cut across Western Europe left 50 million people without power – and a state of emergency is still in place this morning across Spain.
Dramatic scenes yesterday saw people raid supermarket shelves as they panic bought goods, with large swathes of the population gearing up for a night of no electricity and essential power. Madrid’s main airport was hit, the city’s subway evacuated and traffic lights in the city turned off following the sudden interruption to the electricity supply around midday on Monday, with similar scenes reported across Portugal and further afield.
The Lisbon metro also stopped running, while issues with broadband, 5G and landline telephones continued this morning. Several power cuts had also been reported across parts of France.
Major disruptions continue on Spain’s railway network this morning despite power being restored to 99% of the country, with trains being cancelled and rescheduled at short notice.

Meanwhile, easyJet said the widespread blackouts in France, Spain and Portugal are affecting flights. A statement reads: “Power outages in Portugal and Spain are impacting access to some airports and affecting some airports operations including Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona.
“Like all airlines, we are experiencing some disruption to our flying programme meaning that some return flights from Lisbon and Madrid have been unable to operate,” the airline said, adding: “Our flying programme at Porto and Faro airports is operating as planned.”
