A garden expert has shared the secret to a “weed-free wonderland” lawn. Cornmeal is a natural and organic way to suppress weeds so they don’t ruin your garden
Weeds can be a real pain in the garden, hogging sunlight, water and nutrients – leaving your lawn looking lacklustre. Banishing these pesky invaders might tempt you to grab that bottle of chemical weed killer but don’t do it yet.
Spraying those harsh chemicals not only damages your soil, but also poses a threat to friendly pollinators fluttering about your garden. Ross from Lawn and Weed Expert is on a mission to weed out those harsh products from our gardening routines. He’s sharing a top tip for transforming your turf into a “weed-free wonderland” without inflicting any harm – say hello to the magic of cornmeal.

Ross explained: “A naturally organic and non-toxic weed suppressant, corn gluten meal is said to prevent weed seeds from germinating without harming the healthy grass, effectively cutting weeds off at the source before they have a chance to ravage your lawn.”
With summer around the corner, cornmeal comes to the rescue, squashing weed seeds’ dreams before they turn into garden nightmares.
This unsuspecting kitchen buddy packs proteins that wrestle weeds to the ground, preventing them from anchoring roots in your garden, allowing your green oasis to remain tidy and vibrant throughout the year.
Cornmeal does more than just play bouncer to weeds – it’s brimming with nitrogen, the secret sauce that powers up your grass, making it grow greener and lusciously thicker.
But, here’s the rub, folks – cornmeal is like a pre-emptive strike on weeds; if you’ve already got the cheeky blighters showing their faces in the ground, cornmeal won’t send them packing.
In a boozy twist to gardening, it turns out that vodka or gin can help you get rid of those stubborn weeds on your lawn, reports the Express.
Ross explained: “While it may seem likely a waste of perfectly good alcohol, both vodka and gin make for surprisingly effective weed killers without killing your grass. Simply spray onto the desired area and let nature take its course!”
Who knew your favourite spirits could double as garden aids? It’s all down to how alcohol draws moisture from weeds when exposed to sunlight, desiccating them until they wither away within a few hours.
He went on to say: “While this may seem odd, if you’ve ever had a heavy night at a festival and woken up in a hot tent the following morning, you’ll completely understand why. Just try to keep the spray generally aimed at the weeds, as it can have a similar dehydrative effect on flowers too.”
The DIY concoction is simple – just mix one ounce of spirit with six ounces of water and make sure it’s well diluted to protect your green grass.
This natural herbicide won’t pick sides between weeds and lush grass, and luckily, it’s not potent enough to cause serious turf trouble.
For extra sticking power, add a squirt of washing-up liquid to make the solution adhere better to those pesky weeds.
Transfer the solution into an empty spray bottle, then liberally apply it directly to the weed. This should keep your lawn weed-free for a number of weeks, letting you bask in the sunny weather in a beautifully kept garden.
