Banish pigeons from your garden if you put one thing near bird feeders

By staff30 April 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Pigeons can be a nuisance in your garden as they leave droppings and nesting materials, but there is one thing you can place near your bird feeders to keep them at bay

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty nine metres at 15:06pm on a Springtime afternoon in April of a Rock Dove or Feral pigeon (Columba livia) off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.

They are a wild ancestor of domestic world pigeons. A common sight in UK gardens, and traditionally seen on London postcards of Piccadilly circus until the feeding of pigeons was banned, they can weigh up to 370g with a wingspan of 34cms. There are approximately 550,000 breeding pairs in the UK.

While pigeons might seem innocuous as they wander through your garden, their presence can lead to significant damage due to their droppings and unhygienic nesting habits. According to experts from FantasticPestControl, one simple trick can deter pigeons from your garden: placing a specific item near your bird feeders.

Although pigeons are generally not aggressive, they can spread airborne diseases and carry over 50 types of ectoparasites, many of which are hazardous. To keep pigeons at bay, the experts recommend tying a string across roosting areas. They explained: “Strings tied one inch above the nesting areas will make landing uncomfortable for pigeons.”

Pigeons not only spread disease but also shed a substantial number of feathers, dispersing nesting material across the property.

These feathers can clog gutters, eaves, and air vents, causing water accumulation, reports the Express.

The experts also suggest installing an anti-roosting spike strip to discourage pigeons from landing in your garden.

They advised: “Choose strategical spots such as window sills and ledges to deter pigeons from landing.”

Additionally, the pet experts recommend safeguarding your bird feeder to protect your garden from the “bully bird”.

They stated: “When it comes to sharing, pigeons are known as the type that doesn’t.

“As soon as you stock your bird feeders, the ‘bully bird’ will arrive promptly, scaring off the smaller birds and stealing as much food as they can fit in their beaks.

“Your only chance for bird peace is to keep these intruders away altogether.”
