Every UK supermarket opening time for this weekend’s May bank holiday

The Mirror rounds up everything you need to know about when supermarkets including Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Aldi are open and closed on Monday, May 5

The early May bank holiday means the opening times of your favourite supermarket may be a little different this weekend. The early May bank holiday is on Monday, May 5.

The second May bank holiday, which is also known as the Spring bank holiday, in later this month on Monday, May 26. The good news is, stores are generally open this Monday – but some are operating under shorter opening hours.

Here is everything you need to know about when supermarkets are open and closed on Monday, May 5. As a general rule, you should also double check the opening times of your local store online just to avoid disappointment.

Tesco

Tesco stores will be open as normal across the bank holiday weekend, with opening hours only changing on Monday, May 5. On Friday and Saturday – so May 2 and 3 – stores will open at either 6am or 7am, and close as late as midnight.=

On Sunday, most larger stores are open from 10am or 11am, until 4pm or 5pm. Stores in Scotland are open for much longer hours, as trading rules are different in Scotland.

On the bank holiday Monday itself on May 5, the larger Tesco stores in England and Wales will be opening at around 8am and will be closing at 6pm. In Scotland, the majority will be closing a little later at 8pm. tesco’s convenience stores will be open as normal all weekend.

Sainsbury’s

Over the bank holiday weekend, Sainsbury’s stores wil be open as normal. On Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, Sainsbury’s superstores will open between 6am and 7am and close between 10pm and 11pm. On Sunday, larger stores will be open from from 10am to 4pm or 11am to 5pm.

Sainsbury’s convenience stores usually open from 6am or 7am to 10pm and 11pm – even on Sundays – and this will remain the same over the entire bank holiday weekend – including Monday. On the bank holiday Monday, Sainsbury’s larger stores will open from 8am until 8pm. Scottish Sainsbury’s stores will also open from 8am until 8pm.

Morrisons

Morrisons stores will open as normal on Friday May 2, Saturday May 3, and Sunday, May 4. This means stores will open at either 6am or 7am and close between 10pm and midnight. On Sunday, stores will open at either 10am and 11am and close between 4pm and 5pm.

On the bank holiday Monday, larger supermarket stores will be opening at 7am and will be closing earlier, with the majority of stores pulling down the shutters at 8pm. Morrisons Daily stores will open from 7am until 10pm all weekend, and this includes the bank holiday Monday – although some do open a little later until 11pm.

Asda

Like other supermarket stores, Asda ‘s opening hours will remain the same over the weekend and will only change on Monday, May 5. On Friday and Saturday, larger Asda stores will open as early as 6am and close as late as midnight.

On Sunday, larger Asda stores will open for six hours from either 10am or 11am, until 4pm or 5pm. The chain’s smaller convenience stores, Asda Express, are normally open for 24 hours every day, even on Sundays.

On the Bank Holiday itself, Asda stores will be opening a little later than usual with some stores opening between 7am and 8am and will be closing at 10pm. Scottish Asda stores will open under their usual hours all weekend.

Aldi

On the bank holiday Monday, Aldi shops will close slightly earlier than normal. Instead of closing at 10pm, Aldi has confirmed that the majority of shops will shut at 8pm. Again, the exception is in Scotland, where regular 8am until 10pm shopping hours will be in place for most stores.

Aldi opening times will remain as normal on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Aldi stores are normally open between 8am and 10pm on Friday and Saturday, across England, Wales and Scotland. On Sundays, Aldi is usually open from 10am until 4pm, or 11am until 5pm, in England and Wales – in Scotland they’re open from 9am until 8pm.

Lidl

On the bank holiday Monday, Lidl stores appear to be opening later at 8am and will be open until their normal closing time of 10pm. Although this can vary depending on where your local store is based, for example, if it’s in a shopping centre then it could close earlier. You can find your nearest Lidl with the supermarket’s locator tool here.

Lidl stores were open at 7am and closed at 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Again like other supermarkets, Lidl will were open for six hours on Sunday from either 10am or 11am to either 4pm or 5pm. Lidl usually opens 30 minutes earlier on Sundays but for browsing only.

Waitrose

Waitrose opening hours vary considerably from store to store. Some stores open as early as 7am whilst others don’t open until 9am. This is the same with it’s closing hours with some shutting shop for the day as early as 5pm and others at late as 10pm.

The bank holiday hours does show that some Waitrose stores will be opening under their usual hours and closing an hour or two earlier. You can find your nearest Waitrose with the supermarket’s locator tool here.

M&S

On the bank holiday, it appears stores will be opening under their normal hours but closing an hour or two earlier depending on where it is. You can find your nearest M&S stores with the retailer’s locator tool here.

The majority of stores opened between 8am and 9am on Friday and Saturday over this bank holiday weekend. On Sunday, both M&S food halls and stores look as if they are only trading for six hours in England and Wales with opening times being between 10am and 11am and closing between 4pm and 5pm.
