Oscar Piastri moves ahead of Lando Norris in key F1 marker despite 82 fewer races

By staff5 May 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Oscar Piastri is now the clear leader for the drivers’ championship after yet another success at the Miami GP and has now sent a strong sign to his McLaren teammate that he’s not going anywhere

Oscar Piastri has already beaten Lando Norris’ race wins record despite 82 fewer GP appearances. The Australian claimed the sixth win of his career over the weekend in Miami.

He finished over four seconds ahead of McLaren teammate Norris, while the win also saw the gap between the two in the drivers’ standings increase to 16 points. But Piastri’s success in Miami was also notable given that it saw him move ahead of Norris’ all-time career wins.

The 24-year-old now has six GP victories during his career – four of those alone coming this season in Miami, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and China. Piastri also led the way in Hungary and Azerbaijan in 2024.

Meanwhile, Norris has five GP wins during his career. The 25-year-old won four races last term – his first success coming in Miami, while he also claimed victory in the Netherlands, Singapore and Abu Dhabi. Norris won the first race of this term in Australia.

While it is notable that Piastri has moved ahead of his teammate, he’s also done it in far less time. Piastri has actually managed to achieve more wins in 82 fewer GP outings.

Speaking after his latest success, he said: “I think towards the end I started to get things a bit more back under control but there’s still definitely some things to work on from this afternoon. Very happy with the win, very happy with the points but constantly got to keep learning. Very happy to be leaving Miami on top.

“It’s just incredible, the hard work that’s gone in. I remember two years ago here in Miami we were genuinely the slowest team. I think we got lapped twice.

“To now have won the Grand Prix by over 35s to third is an unbelievable result and the hard work of every single person – firstly the people here at the track but everyone at the factory as well.”

Norris has also spoken out following the result in Miami – and claims that going wheel-to-wheel with reigning champion Max Verstappen ended up costing him. He said: “It’s never the best feeling but the team have done an amazing job so I can’t fault them at all – good pit stops, great pace.

“We were up the road so it was a good feeling. Oscar drove well, Max put up a good fight as always and I paid the price but it’s the way it is.”

Both Norris and Piastri will be aiming to add another victory to their respective records in just under a fortnight’s time during the Emilia Romagna GP.
