Has you child done the 20 things they should do before 10 years old? asks expert

Parents have been advised by an expert on outdoor activities every child should do before the age of 10, as research shows a worrying concern on kids spending more time indoors

Technology has come a long way since rewinding VHS tapes, recording the top charts on a cassette or carrying around a hefty Walkman to play on repeat our favourite Spice Girls hit. Today, kids are becoming more tech-savvy than their parents, with iPads, the latest smartphones and game consoles, not to mention the ease of scrolling through social media to learn the latest TikTok dance or streaming any film or TV show at the touch of a button.

While technology can enhance our lifestyles in many ways, new research has found a growing concern that children are missing out on outdoor activities that previous generations thrived playing.

A study from Evan Evans Tours revealed that 68% of parents are reluctant to let their kids play outside without supervision, despite wanting them to experience the simplicity of the outdoors, like rolling down hills or climbing trees.

In addition, the research from Britain’s longest-established tour company, found that almost half of the parents (42%) said they were hesitant to let their child walk or ride a bike to a friend’s house or a play park alone. This comes as almost two-thirds (62%) of parents admitted that their own childhood involved a lot more free play and unsupervised time compared to children today.

The research highlighted the change in childhoods, with kids today spending more time indoors and on their devices looking at screens, compared to previous generations who spent more time outdoors with friends or their siblings.

As a result, the study found that there was a list of outdoor activities that parents wanted their children to do before reaching the age of 10.

One of the experiences mentioned by parents was those with a Harry Potter theme, with 56% saying that activities involving film locations were the most exciting for kids under the age of 10.

In a bid to encourage kids to spend more time outdoors, particularly with summer fast approaching, Evan Evans has listed 20 activities kids should do before they turn 10, as recommended by other parents.

These activities range from simple outdoor activities to exploring nature and fun family days out but how many has your little ones ticked off?

Activities to do before the age of 10:

  1. Roll down a big hill
  2. Climb a tree and conquer new heights
  3. Camp out in the wild
  4. Try tracking animals
  5. Visit behind-the-scenes film locations
  6. Experience the life of a king or queen at a castle
  7. Play football and score a goal
  8. Jump into the deep end of a swimming pool (with supervision)
  9. Open water swimming
  10. Visit a famous landmark
  11. Go to a show and watch live performers
  12. Scream on a roller coaster ride
  13. Meet friends in the park for a playdate
  14. Head out on a hiking adventure
  15. Put on a show for family or friends
  16. Learn a balance skill such as cycling, skateboarding or ice skating
  17. Forage wild, edible foods
  18. Collect leaves and branches to create an outdoor shelter
  19. Horseriding
  20. Try an obstacle course

Alexis Peppis, Head of Sales of Evan Evans, said: “Families are craving experiences that spark imagination and create lasting memories – and we understand the importance of providing those magical moments, whether it’s stepping into the wizarding world of Harry Potter or exploring the great outdoors.

“We’re committed to offering tours that connect children with these enriching activities, and we have plenty to keep families busy and creating unforgettable memories.”
