Keir Starmer will announce a major new trade deal with the US today after Donald Trump unexpectedly teased the announcement on social media.
The US President is due to give a press conference at 3pm UK time setting out details of any agreement. He wrote on his Truth Social platform overnight: “This should be a very big and exciting day for the United States of America and the United Kingdom.”
In a second post today, he said: “The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come. Because of our long time history and allegiance together, it is a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement.”
The PM said this morning: “Talks with the US have been ongoing and you’ll hear more from me about that later today. But make no mistake, I will always act in our national interest, for workers, businesses and families, to deliver security and renewal for our country.”
It follows months of intense negotiations. In an update to the Commons, Environment Secretary Steve Reed said the Government has stuck to “red lines” and the deal would not be damaging to British farmers.
Nations across the world have been scrambling to get a deal to ease levies slapped on imports going into the US. It comes after Mr Trump unleashed a wave of tariffs on so-called “Liberation Day” last month.
The Government has been pursuing a deal with the US to reduce the impact of tariffs, including a 10% levy on all UK exports and a 25% charge on steel, aluminium and cars.
