‘I’m a baby name consultant – these names are so rare they’re going extinct’

By staff8 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A baby name consultant has shared the girls’ names that have been used five times in the past year, putting them on the brink of extinction and making them ‘rare’ choices

Parents looking for a rare baby name should consider some of these monikers, which are on the brink of extinction. There is a seemingly endless list of names out there for parents to choose from, and some are far more popular than others.

While you might want to avoid the names at the top of the list if you’re looking for something more unique, have you ever considered choosing a name so rare that only five people have it? A baby name consultant shared a video on TikTok recently in which she shared some names that were only used a maximum of five times each in 2024.

Morgan Timm explained that these “super rare” baby names are used so sparingly that they are “basically extinct ” and could actually disappear completely in 2025 if no parents decide to use them for their children.

She said each name was used exactly five times last year, which is the minimum requirement for them to appear on the list at all. This means that if they’re used just one time less in 2025, they’ll vanish from the data.

Morgan released two videos, one in which she ran through the girls’ names that were only used five times, and another follow-up video that shared the same data for boys. The naming expert used US data for her videos, but the names can still spark inspiration for an uncommon name among British parents, too.

For girls, the rarest names were a mix of “out-there” monikers and some traditional ones that have fallen out of favour in recent years.

Names that might be considered “old-fashioned” that made the list included Doretta, Dot, Elsbeth, and Petunia. While some parents opted for more unique names such as Hero, Peaches, Power, Starlit, and Viper.

There were also a couple of names traditionally given to boys that made the cut for girls, including Dale, Dean, and Alvie – which seems to be a cross between Alfie and Alvin.

In her video aimed at boys’ names, there seemed to be more “out-there” suggestions and fewer names that have just been lost to time. Barnaby was one of the only names on the list that could be considered “old-fashioned”, while unusual monikers such as Clovis, Ghost, Luck, Star, and Wonder made up most of the list.

Much like the names for girls, several entries were traditionally considered girls’ names, including Bonnie, Dove, Poppy, Violet, and Yara.

Commenters on the video were divided about the names on the list. Some confessed they would be adding obscure choices, such as Dublin and Louetta, to their own lists of potential baby names, while others said they couldn’t stand many of the options.

One person said: “Hero has been on my list forever. Such a good Shakespeare name.” Another added: “Oh, I love Thistle actually!” And a third wrote: “Dell is one of my favourite names ever.”
