Foxes will snub your plants and garden if you add two natural items

By staff12 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Foxes are a cute animal to spot, but they can also get quite messy if they enter your garden spaces – but there’s a way to keep them away from entering them by using these two unusual but natural items.

Foxes are widespread in the UK, and although spotting them might leave some people in awe of their cuteness, they can leave quite a mess when popping into someone’s garden. Thankfully, there’s a way to stop these little intruders- and it costs no extra money.

Extra cleaning is the last thing gardeners want to deal with, especially with summertime around the corner. But making sure that your bin bags are tucked away in your bins and not left on the floor can make a big difference. While they’re harmless, foxes can still dig holes and cause a lot of mess if they spot a bin bag full of goodies on the floor.

According to Roller Barrier, these animals are quite sensitive to smells. To keep them away from your gardening spaces, this can be easily done by distributing hair clippings and urine around different areas where foxes like to dig.

The site said: “Compost, pet food, bird food, food waste in bins, fruit and vegetables can all attract foxes to a garden. Removing or securing these potential food sources will immediately make your garden far less attractive to foxes.

Although it might sound like an unusual method, foxes don’t like the smell of male urine. This is because it makes them feel vulnerable in their territory, forcing them to leave the area. Foxes usually use the urine method to mark their own territories, seeing human urine as a disruption.

When it comes to hair clippings, foxes also don’t like the unfamiliar scent, which they associate with danger. To keep these wild animals away from your garden, simply spread the hair clippings around the areas in the garden where foxes like to enter.

Roller Barrier also encouraged gardeners to keep their garden spaces clean and tidy, as well as securing bin areas where foxes might potentially be attracted to sniff in. Foxes are attracted to areas that are untidy and not well-taken care of, as it provides a shelter area for them to rest in.

Their good sense of smell is also one of the reasons why they become attracted to gardens, but this can be used to the gardener’s advantage to kick them away. Using male urine and hair clippings won’t only keep them away for good, but also in a safe manner that won’t affect their health.

By following these two simple tips, foxes will be avoiding entering your garden spaces. Nonetheless, it’s important to be aware of other wildlife, including birds and hedgehogs, as these methods might cause them distress.
