Son Heung-min reveals Harry Kane conversation after former Spurs captain ended trophy wait

Spurs captain Son is desperate to land a trophy at club now 17 years without silverware as he looks forward to next week’s Europa League showdown against Manchester United

Son Heung-min believes no one wants to bring glory back to Tottenham more than him. And after experiencing two previous final defeats he feels this squad has “all the pieces to complete the puzzle” against Manchester United next week.

Captain Son returned from a month out with a foot injury as a substitute against Crystal Palace on Sunday and he will feature at Aston Villa on Friday.

And while Ange Postecoglou insists he will not let heart rule over his head when it comes to deciding his starting team in Bilbao, Son says the chance to be a central part of the team that finally ends the long wait for a trophy is what has kept him in north London.

“We’ve been talking about this for years. The biggest reason I stayed at Tottenham was because I wanted to do something others couldn’t achieve,” he said. “That’s probably why I’m where I am now.

“You need all the pieces to complete a puzzle. I think I’ve gathered all the other pieces to make that puzzle complete.

“It feels like I’ve been missing that one most important final piece, and I’ve been trying to find it for the past ten years. I really hope I can finally complete the puzzle this time.”

Son and defender Ben Davies are the only remaining players left from the 2019 Champions League final defeat to Liverpool. He was also a runner up in the EFL Cup, losing to Manchester City four seasons ago, and he wants to channel the hurt from those defeats.

“I believe I definitely learned something from those failures,” he added. “It’s important for me and the more experienced players to share those experiences with the current squad.

“It feels different this time. I really want to win – more than anyone else, I think. So many people are supporting us with the same desperate passion I feel.”

Son has spoken to former captain Harry Kane since the striker finally ended his wait for silverware by winning the Bundesliga at Bayern Munich.

“I was really happy to see him happy,” Son added. “He is one of my best friends and to see a once team-mate achieve so much, I was delighted for him like he’s my family.

“With that positive energy I hope he can support Spurs in the game as well so we can achieve a good result like his. “
