London thunderstorm rocks city with ‘super loud’ thunder and lightning despite blue skies

Parts of the UK are facing thunderstorms with people caught out by the sudden sounds of crashing thunder this evening and a yellow weather warning is in place until 10pm

Brits are being urged to “hide in pubs” as glorious sunshine has suddenly turned to crashing thunder and then heavy rain.

Sun lovers were lapping up the balmy conditions with blue skies again over the weekend but forecasters had warned of possible stormy weather ahead. And after temperatures reached the mid-20Cs the claps of thunder have now arrived. A Met Office warning for thunderstorms is also in place until 10pm tonight which spreads across the south of the country, Wales and the West Midlands.

Many people have taken to social media shocked by the thunder with the skies still looking blue before the storm clouds later rolled in.

One person wrote: “Really impressive continuous rolls of thunder for the last hour in W. London. I got confused as I kept looking out the window and everywhere was bright blue skies. Just looked the other direction however, and it looks like f***ing Mordor!”

Another said: “The way i thought i misheard the thunder and was like nah its sunny… thank u london,” while a further wrote on X: “I can hear rain and thunder, but i’m looking out at sun and blue skies ??? london fix up.”

There are calls for people on their way home from work to head to the pubs for shelter. “North London brudda, it came out of NOWHERE. Legit sunshine and heat to thunder,” read a comment. And another said: “Wow that’s a bad set of disruptions. And there’s thunder rumbling around west London so yes, perhaps hide in a pub!”

The Met Office said that we could expect storms at the start of the week although a high pressure is likely to take back control in a few days and restore the blue skies.

A statement from the national weather agency read: “A temporary interruption to the fine spell of weather continues on Monday and Tuesday for some, before more settled and warm conditions return for the majority of the UK by Wednesday.

“Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely at times over parts of England and Wales today. A yellow National Severe Weather Warning for thunderstorms is in place for parts of Wales, central and southwest England until 10pm this evening. Conditions will be dry with sunny spells elsewhere, feeling warm for many and muggy in the south.

“Tonight, any showers or thunderstorms will ease and it will leave a largely dry night, with some clear spells. Some isolated mist and fog patches will form in places by dawn and some thicker cloud around northeast coasts.

“The chance of showers persists into Tuesday across the south of the UK, though much of the UK will however have another bright sunny day, with the highest temperatures in central parts where 23°C-25°C is likely.”
