A study of 1,000 private renters found they use adhesive tiles, hanging plants and removable wallpaper to enhance their spaces – and here are some tips to make your property feel more like a permanent home
Renters are shelling out nearly £700 on ‘removable’ décor to make their rented property feel more like home. A survey of 1,000 private tenants revealed they’re using adhesive tiles, hooks for hanging plants and removable wallpaper to spruce up their spaces.
Around 14% are fitting wireless stick-on wall sconces, while 23% have introduced smart lighting. Eight out of ten believe the time and money invested is worthwhile for a more personalised space. However, the study also discovered that these temporary solutions aren’t solely about looks. According to the research, 28% are also concentrating on making their home more energy efficient.
A portion of those trying to boost their home’s energy efficiency have resorted to smart meters, with 38% installing them to better manage energy usage, 31% opting for energy-saving appliances, and 22% switching energy providers for a greener option.
Steve Pimblett, chief data officer at Rightmove, said: “Energy efficiency is one of the top priorities for renters, with 88% valuing a low carbon footprint and 80% considering it in their next move.”
Steve added: “Renters are not only aware of the importance but are also willing to act, with the vast majority of them ready to pay more for energy-efficient homes and encouraging their landlords to make green upgrades to help save on their energy bills.”
Victoria Bacon, director at Smart Energy GB, commented: “Smart meters enable you to track and manage your energy use, and many people are able to make savings as a result – just remember to let your landlord know.”
The study also found the personal touches that bring the most joy include photos of loved ones, soft furnishings, and chosen home accessories. Softer lighting, colourful walls, and smart technology have also further helped renters feel happier in their homes.
After moving in, 36% felt the property they were in needed improvement, prompting their décor upgrades. For others, the motivation was a result of the place not feeling like home, while 14% wanted their surroundings to reflect their personality.
The research also found 45% are most likely to tackle these home updates between May and August, with warmer weather sparking inspiration for 37%. A third (34%) said spring and summer let them get out in the garden for DIY, while 30% claim longer days help them make progress.

- Swap harsh lighting for warm white LED bulbs to create a softer, more inviting atmosphere and save energy.
- Upgrade your shower head for better water pressure, efficiency, and a more enjoyable daily routine. Keep the old one so you can swap it back when you leave.
- Use your own curtains to personalize your space and add thermal lining for extra warmth and energy savings. Swap back before you go and use them again.
- Block draughts with homemade excluders that are easy to make, store, and hang when not in use.
- Hang art without damaging walls using picture rails or self-adhesive hooks for a renter-friendly personal touch.
- Work with unchangeable décor by matching existing features with coordinated accessories for a cohesive look.
- Soften your kitchen’s look with tile stickers, new cabinet handles, and warm lighting like a countertop lamp. Remember to put the original handles back when you move out.
- Request a smart meter to monitor energy use in near-real time and manage your bills more efficiently.
