Huyton shooting: Merseyside Police’s statement in FULL as suspect gunned by officers

Merseyside Police have issued a statement about last night’s suspected double stabbing in Huyton, which is in Knowsley, that left a man and woman with serious injuries

A man suspected of a double stabbing was shot by armed police yesterday.

Residents in Huyton, Merseyside, heard “lots of screaming and shouting” and the sounds of gunshots when the man allegedly assaulted the pair in broad daylight. A man and a woman were rushed to hospital where they remain with serious but stable injuries.

Armed response officers from Merseyside Police subsequently shot the suspect. He has also been taken to hospital for treatment. The force acknowledges the community, which is east of Liverpool, “will be shocked by this incident.” Some residents have already expressed to concern to reporters in the wake of the horror.

“I was really shocked. It’s usually a quiet street as it’s facing the footpath, and I have children, so it’s very worrying to let your kids go out even during the daytime. Not just my kids, but also myself,” Kelly Tumbare, 36, said last night.

But Merseyside Police have reassured the community, popular with families, “this was an isolated incident”. In full, the force’s statement reads: “We can confirm that officers are currently in Huyton following an incident earlier this afternoon, Wednesday 14 May. At around 4.25pm, we received a report that a man and woman had been stabbed in the Tobruk Road area

“Armed response officers attended and the suspect was subsequently shot by police. He has been taken to hospital for treatment. The man and woman assaulted have been taken to hospital where their condition is described as serious but stable.

“An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident and the road has been cordoned off. Officers remain at the scene and are carrying out house-to-house and CCTV inquiries. As is standard procedure in these circumstances the force has notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who have begun an independent investigation.”

“Detective Superintendent Paul Speight said: “I know that people who live in this area of Huyton and the wider communities of Merseyside will be shocked by this incident. We are still in the very early stages of investigating and part of our initial inquiries will be to establish the full circumstances of what happened. In the meantime, I want to reassure the public that Merseyside Police is committed to keeping our communities safe and we take all reports of incidents involving weapons extremely seriously.

“This was an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else. All three people have been taken to hospital to be assessed for their various injuries. The IOPC will now conduct an independent investigation and we will be co-operating fully with their investigation in the coming days and weeks.”
