Cruise guests make ‘key etiquette mistake’ and it annoys other passengers

A cruise ship guest has shared the ‘key lift etiquette mistake’ that passengers keep making – and it can make the small elevators feel even more cramped and busy

Cruise ships typically boast over 15 decks, so guests may prefer to use the lift rather than tackle the stairs if they’re heading a considerable distance upwards. One cruise passenger shared on Reddit: “So far, I’ve not been on a ship where the lifts are not jammed during certain times.”

They noted that the ship’s compact lifts seemed to be constantly crammed with people and didn’t appear to be sufficiently large. Another guest suggested that the problem often stemmed from passengers not understanding how the lifts operated. They explained: “A lot of people didn’t seem to be aware of how they worked, even several days into the cruise.

“Gaggles of people would just hop on the next available lift when they weren’t the ones who summoned it to the floor, and it wasn’t headed to their desired floor. Then they would jab at the touch screen inside the elevator to try to make it go where they wanted.”

Many cruise ships employ a lift system where individuals press the button for their intended floor prior to entering the lift. A lift is then dispatched for that person and should transport them directly to their destination without the need to press the button inside.

However, novice guests may inadvertently enter the wrong lift, potentially causing disruption in the system, reports the Express.

One guest said: “The stairs always work. And have the added benefit of burning off a small amount of the excess calories we all take in.” Another person commented: “Small amount? If you stay committed to the stairs, you can put some serious work in.

“I’m an unavoidably early riser, I was putting in 10,000 steps every day, much of that on the stairs. Really got a good grasp on the layout of the boat and helped avoid that stuck on a boat in the ocean feeling.”

For guests, taking the stairs not only provides exercise but also aids in becoming more familiar with the ship, uncovering new areas that might have remained undiscovered otherwise.
