A husband’s romantic surprise for his wife went awry when a miscommunication with hotel staff led to their bed being covered in crisps.

Rachel Norman, 36, and her husband Johnnie, 35, were celebrating her birthday in Blackpool, Lancashire, when he secretly asked the hotel staff to place 30 assorted bags of crisps on their bed as a surprise for his crisp-loving wife.

However, the staff misunderstood his request and opened the bags, scattering the crisps over the sheets like salty confetti. Upon returning to their room, a shocked Rachel initially thought they had been victims of an unusual break-in, but she still decided to eat some of the crisps.

Once a mortified Johnnie explained what must have happened, the pair couldn’t stop laughing. Rachel, who works for the NHS and hails from Accrington, Lancashire, is such a fan of crisps that she used to consume four bags a day, spending up to £15 a week on them, until recently deciding to cut down to one bag every two days in an effort to be healthier.

Reflecting on the incident, Rachel said: “I was hysterical. His face was a picture. Since that day he’s never tried any more romantic antics, but it’s one of our favourite memories.”

Johnnie, a warehouse operative, had bought the crisps for Rachel’s 30th birthday on December 15, 2018. Looking back on the incident, he said: “It really is funny! Like we had some sort of prawn-cocktail crisp fetish..”

The hotel staff changed the sheets and offered the couple a voucher for another night’s stay.
