Mohamed Salah aims subtle dig at FSG as he admits surprise over Liverpool contract

Mohamed Salah recently signed a new two-year deal with Liverpool after serious doubts over his future emerged as talks between Reds chiefs and representatives of the Egyptian dragged on

Mohamed Salah has aimed a subtle dig at Liverpool owners FSG after admitting his surprise at extending his stay at Anfield. Salah’s contract had been due to expire at the end of this season.

Negotiations over a new deal had gone on for some time, with Salah revealing multiple times he expected to leave. Ultimately, an agreement was found, with the Egyptian inking a new two-year contract.

Salah has scored 33 goals and notched 23 assists in his 50 games in all competitions so far this season. Those strikes helped to fire Liverpool to the Premier League title, his second since joining the Reds from Roma.

The superstar attacker will now remain at Anfield until at least the summer of 2027. But in a new interview ahead of their final away game of the season, Salah has launched a stinging assault on the club’s ownership.

The Fenway Sports Group have been notoriously stingy when it comes to handing out big deals to veteran players. And Salah has revealed that that history convinced him he likely would not be able to stay.

When asked by Sky Sports what he thought his chances of remaining were, he replied: “Based on club history? Ten percent. The philosophy of the club, I know how they deal with their players over 30 in the past.

“I didn’t expect I was going to stay. It’s not something bad. We see how they deal with this situation in the past. It took six months for the negotiations to go really quick.

“And from January things are getting better and better. It took us a while. I think the club was testing me to see if I could still provide or not! I didn’t want more than that, I just said two years.”

Salah believes that this year’s title win can kickstart a fresh period of dominance for the Merseyside club. He is targeting a Premier League and Champions League double next season.

“The players are new, excited, young, they learn from us and also have their ability to give it all. We have a very good group and we can win every trophy we want,” Salah added.

“This year I won the Premier League and I think I never felt happier in the club for eight years like this moment in the Spurs game. I really wish we win the Champions League game. I know the Premier League is always nice for the club and that’s how it should be.

“But I would love to win the Champions League and Premier League again. I think the expectation for us not to win, that’s a problem and I think that needed to change with the players we have and the fans behind us.

“Liverpool losing that should be a surprise, not the other way around. There should be a limit to how many times the fans need to hear, ‘we go again next season’. To go to the last game of the season and tell them thank you, it’s the best way to do it with a big trophy.”
