Fancy discovering a city by foot? For many, the ideal way to familiarise oneself with a new locale is to embark on a leisurely stroll. But which of the UK’s cities are the most pedestrian-friendly?
A study conducted by the experts at Preply determined the UK’s most walkable cities by considering the distance between major attractions, the time required to travel between them and the number of steps involved.
A stunning historic city clinched the top spot – do you concur with the ranking? The team also scrutinised Europe’s most walkable cities, with one of the continent’s sunniest spots taking the crown.
Bath

Despite its beauty, Bath didn’t make the cut as one of the UK’s most walkable destinations. The city’s main attractions were nearly seven miles apart. However, Bath’s quaint streets are well-suited for pedestrians, and there’s always the option of a pit stop for a bun.
Cambridge
As one of the UK’s most emblematic university cities, Cambridge’s primary attractions were over two hours’ walk apart. However, if you limit your exploration to the university, the city is relatively easy to navigate on foot.
Manchester
Manchester’s key attractions are just under six miles apart, and it would take less than two hours to visit them all. Be sure not to miss the city’s art gallery or the John Rylands Library.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, is one of Britain’s most pedestrian-friendly cities, with its key sights within a five-and-a-half-mile radius. However, be warned that the trek to Arthur’s Seat, while a must-do, isn’t as easy as you might imagine so come prepared.
Liverpool
Just missing out on the top five is Liverpool, where the main attractions are all within a five-mile stretch. While it’s famed as The Beatles’ birthplace, there’s more to this city, including what’s been dubbed the UK’s hippest neighbourhood.
London
Despite its size, the Big Smoke ranks among the top five walkable cities, with its highest-rated attractions within a five-mile stroll. The capital also boasts numerous pedestrianised areas for tourists to wander.
Bristol
Bristol is another of the UK’s most walkable cities, with its major points of interest all within a 3.5-mile radius. The city’s former port houses the SS Great Britain Museum and several art galleries, making it an ideal starting point for a Bristol city break.
York
York clinches a spot as one of the UK’s most walkable cities. The historic city’s main attractions are just over two miles apart. Don’t forget to grab one of York’s renowned chocolate treats for a delicious pick-me-up after all that walking.
Brighton
Brighton, one of the UK’s premier seaside staycation spots, is also among the country’s most pedestrian-friendly cities. Its main attractions are a mere 1.5 miles apart, allowing tourists to visit them all in just over half an hour. Be sure not to miss the Royal Pavilion, a unique example of British architecture.
Oxford
Oxford takes the crown as the UK’s most walkable city. The university town’s key attractions are barely a mile apart, meaning tourists can see them all in just over 20 minutes.
