Rid moss from patios with two ‘cheap items’ you’ll find in the cupboard

Moss can quickly spread across your patios and paving stones and between cracks, creating a green film that detracts from the clean look of your outdoor space

Moss on your patio can be an eyesore and a slippery hazard, ruining both the look and safety of your garden. If you don’t tackle it, this stubborn greenery can spread over your patios and paving stones, creeping into cracks and creating an unsightly film that spoils the pristine appearance of your outdoor area.

Gardening expert Darren Muzzy from Michigan Tree Experts has revealed a nifty trick using a common household item combined with white vinegar to concoct a “moss-killing agent” that will leave you with a “clean, moss-free surface in no time”. To get started on this moss-busting method, Darren advises grabbing a bucket, some warm water, white vinegar, dish soap and a stiff-bristled broom.

He explains: “You will use the vinegar and detergent as your moss-killing agents, and the broom for manual removal.” Begin by sweeping away as much moss as possible. For those stubborn patches, Darren suggests applying some extra effort.

After this initial sweep, gardeners should notice a “significantly decreased” amount of moss.

However, for a more enduring fix, Darren recommends following up with a “use a detergent and vinegar solution to guarantee a longer-lasting solution”.

Combine warm water with a good squirt of dish soap in a bucket to create a soapy mixture that can “help loosen the moss” from the surface of your patio.

Slather the mixture generously over the mossy patches and give it a good scrub with the broom, then let it sit for a spell.

While that’s doing its magic, whip up a vinegar concoction with equal parts water and vinegar, reports the Express.

Once the soap’s had a chance to do its job, douse the patio with the vinegar mix. Darren highlighted: “Vinegar is a natural moss killer and will help prevent future growth.”

Cap it all off with a warm water rinse to clear away any lingering soap or vinegar.
