A British tourist has been found dead in water off the Gold Coast in Australia.

Police launched a missing persons enquiry for Lewis Jack, 22, after he vanished on Saturday in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast. Mr Jack’s body was, however, found on Tuesday night at around 7.40pm near the Isle of Capri. His death is not being treated as suspicious, police said today.

It is understood detectives believe Mr Jack, who was born in Glasgow, was under the influence of alcohol when he fell into the water and drowned. The young man’s grandmother, Margaret Mooney, has led tributes to Mr Jack on social media today, writing she has a “broken heart”.

“It is with a broken heart that I have to say my beautiful grandson has sadly been found. Thank you for all the lovely words and the shares,” Ms Mooney posted on social media.

A devastated friend wrote: “I can’t believe that am actually posting this. Lewis can’t believe your gone, the worst news, you’ll never be forgotten. Fly high.” Another mate shared: “Woke up to such sad news to hear of your passing Lewis, you was such a good lad with the purest soul.”

A further tribute read: “My heart breaks for all Lewis’s family. I wish we could wrap you all in our arms, more so I wish we could have gotten Lewis safely back to you.”

Mr Jack caught a taxi, it is understood, from Cavill Avenue – the heart of Gold Coast’s nightlife – back to near his accommodation on Chevron Island but did not make it on Saturday. The tourist was last seen walking on Gibraltar Drive which runs alongside the Nerang River.

The Mirror has contacted the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for comment.

  • Mr Jack’s tragedy comes after it was reported a British tourist has died three months after he was attacked at random while on vacation in Fuerteventura. Marshall Latham, who was from Cheshire, was assaulted by a stranger, which left the retired carpenter in a coma in December 2024.
  • The 68-year-old man suffered a severe brain injury after he dropped to the ground and knocked his head on the concrete. He was hospitalised with serious injuries in Gran Canaria and had part of his skull removed – which measured to 14cm. Medics also drained his brain to help lower the pressure. His family launched a fundraiser and transferred him to the Aintree Hospital back in the UK, but he has now passed away of his gruesome injuries.
