The rumour mill has been in full swing recently with speculation Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal are set to tie the knot, but the duo made separate entrances at Cannes Film Festival
Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal got fans dreaming of an engagement earlier this month as they cosied up to each other. However, on Wednesday, the pair tried to shut down the rumour mill after attending a red carpet even separately.
The American singer-songwriter, 25, and the Normal People actor, 29, were in Cannes for the annual Film Festival and were taking in the The History of Sound premiere. They made sure to keep their distance though as speculation of their relationship intensifies.
Gracie opted for a figure-hugging gown with a halter neck as she stunned on the red carpet. She completed the look with a black scarf draped over her arms.
Paul, meanwhile, also donned an all-black look, with a shoulder-padded jacket and flared trousers combination. He finished his outfit with a tucked-in shirt and cravat.
Gracie had been spotted wearing a diamond ring in recent days. It sparked intense speculation that the duo were set to take their relationship to the next level. Celebrity gossip page Deux Moi also questioned if the big jewel was an engagement ring, sharing a snap of Gracie in Melbourne.
They also shared a message a fan had sent in. It included an image with an image of the songstress performing on stage while waring the big bit of bling on her engagement finger.
Gracie and Paul got together almost a year ago. They had seemed as though they were ready to split months before engagement rumours spiralled.
In January, they were reportedly dining in a London restaurant when onlookers spotted what was possibly a break-up. Singer singer Gracie was said to have burst into floods of tears before storming out of the eatery.
The couple were said to have been enjoying a bite to eat in North London before things took a dramatic turn. Fellow diners claimed Paul had his “head in his hands as Gracie just sat there crying” at one point.
“She was crying so much that he then started to cry too,” one onlooker claims. “She eventually got up and walked out of the restaurant while they were halfway through their meal and he was left to pay the bill before leaving shortly afterwards.”
Prior to his relationship with Gracie, Gladiator II star Paul was in a relationship with American singer Phoebe Bridgers for around two years. The duo split in December 2022.
Last year, the actor opened up about the distressing rumours about his love life that circulated on social media at the end of 2023, revealing the impact they had on his family.
The internet theory suggested that the BAFTA winning actor would take his one-night stands for a walk the next day, distract them, and then bolt. Some even claimed he’d point out a bird to his date before making a quick getaway. One video claiming to show ‘actual footage’ of him running away racked up over three million views.
Speaking to GQ in November last year, he opened up on the impact these rumours – which he firmly states are ‘categorically untrue’ – had on his family, especially his mother. He said: “We [Mescal and his siblings] were looking at the videos and we were p****** ourselves at it. Categorically untrue. And we were laughing, laughing, laughing, laughing.
“And the one thing that upset me was that I was in the kitchen, I remember my mum looking at the videos and she was getting upset. Isn’t that devastating? I was like, Oh, it’s funny to us my brother, me, my sister because we know that this is the way the internet works.”
He went on: “It’s hilarious. If it was true, it’d be f****** bad, but as a rumour, it’s funny. Then I was like, Oh, if you’re a mother, her impulse is to come out and be like, ‘He wouldn’t do this.'”
