Mirror Daily Digest: Top stories from sex criminal castration to Man Utd catastrophe

Welcome to the Mirror’s Daily Digest, where we pull together all the best stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Sport teams and more. This Thursday, we’re featuring everything from the shock news that Labour are exploring mandatory castration in a brutal paedophile crackdown to Man Utd’s financial woes after losing the Europa League final.

Late last night, news broke that Labour were exploring mandatory chemical castration for paedophiles and rapists under plans to curb sex offenders’ vile urges. Elsewhere, it was revealed Manchester United will listen to offers for every player in the wake of their European defeat and two CBB stars finally confirmed their rumoured romance.

Early this morning, our politics team revealed that Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is exploring whether chemical castration of sex offenders can be made mandatory. Jailed offenders could be forced to undergo hormonal treatment to curb their sexual urges in a move to prevent reoffending.

A voluntary scheme will see sex offenders chemically castrated in two regions in England, covering 20 prisons, as a first step to rolling out nationwide. But Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is also exploring whether the approach could be made mandatory, rather than just voluntary.

A major review of sentencing, chaired by former Justice Secretary David Gauke and published today, called for more evidence to be gathered on chemical castration – a drug treatment that reduces hormone levels to curb libido. It wants a small pilot, which involves a few dozen inmates in the South West of England, to be continued.

Manchester United put EVERY PLAYER up for sale as catastrophic financial reality laid bare

In the wake of their defeat in the Europa League yesterday evening, our sports team revealed Manchester United will listen to offers for EVERY player on their team. No player will be immune from being sold – including captain Bruno Fernandes – as United face up to a catastrophic financial black hole.

The crushing 1-0 loss to Tottenham in Bilbao saw United blow a place in next season’s Champions League – and with it £100million in revenue. Defeat to Spurs means United will not play in Europe at all next season, for only the second time in 35 years and means further cutbacks at the club that has already seen mass redundancies

United’s failure in Bilbao means they also face missing out on signing their top summer targets, including Liam Delap, Matheus Cunha and Victor Osimhen. Without the additional revenue from European games, United will have no choice but to sell players to raise funds for Ruben Amorim to strengthen his squad.

The devastated family of a young British mother who tragically died while on holiday received a huge shock when her autopsy results came back. Mother-of-two Beth Martin, 28, was rushed to hospital after she became “delirious” just one day into her trip to Turkey and was placed in critical care.

Beth, from Portsmouth, unfortunately passed away a day after she was admitted to hospital on April 28 – but her husband Luke’s heartbreak has not ended there as a shocking discovery was made after her death. A UK autopsy revealed doctors had removed her heart without her family’s knowledge.

Beth had travelled on April 27 with Luke and her two children, aged five and eight, but her family now says they are being kept in the dark about what happened to the beloved mother. It is understood that Beth fell ill soon after the Martin family landed at the airport.
