Police have arrested a teenager after the death of a boy following a “medical episode” at an amusement park last night.

Taha Soomro, 16, died at the Barry Island Pleasure Park in Barry, the Vale of Glamorgan, in south Wales following a massive emergency operation, which began at around 5.15pm. South Wales Police confirmed the teenager experienced a “medical episode” and, despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene. Earlier today the venue spoke out about the tragedy and offered its own condolences to the family of the teenager as investigations into the tragedy continue.

South Wales Police has confirmed a 15-year-old boy from Grangetown, has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in custody. Taha’s family are being kept updated by officers. The force said in a statement: “South Wales Police is continuing to investigate the death of 16-year-old teenage boy at Barry Island Pleasure Park.

“He has been named as Taha Soomro, of Grangetown, Cardiff. Police were called just before 5pm yesterday evening (Friday May 23) with a report of a 16-year-old teenage boy suffering a medical episode.

“Despite efforts of emergency services, Taha died at the scene. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause and circumstances of Taha’s death and we would encourage people to avoid speculation on social media.

“We can confirm as part of the investigation, a 15-year-old boy from Grangetown, has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in custody. Taha’s family are being kept updated by officers.”

South Wales Police have asked anyone who was in Barry Island Pleasure Park around the time of the incident who may have information that could assist our investigation is asked to contact us. Detectives are also keen for any mobile phone footage. which can be submitted to the force here.

The pleasure park said earlier today in a statement: “Very sad news yesterday, all of our team did their best to assist the emergency services but unfortunately the boy suffered a medical emergency and couldn’t be saved.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time. Park remains open this morning 11m as usual.”
