Asda will be scrapping the discounts offered to Blue Light Card holders this week. Blue Light Card gives discounts to NHS, social care and emergency workers.
Asda shoppers currently get 5% off fresh food, including meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, fresh fruit juice and smoothies, dairy and bakery products – but this discount will end tomorrow on Tuesday, May 27.
The supermarket says the move reflects its new focus on “providing all our customers with outstanding value every time they visit our stores or shop with us online.”
The Blue Light Card offers exclusive discounts to a range of workers and costs £4.99 to join for two years. You can grab discounts on clothes, holidays, insurance and cars. It can be used across thousands of restaurants, high street shops, online brands and attractions.
Overall, Blue Light says there are around 15,000 discounts to choose from. These can be discounts of 5% up to 25%. Due to the low cost, the card could pay for itself in just a few purchases.

As mentioned before, you can only sign up to the Blue Light scheme if you work in certain professions. According to the Blue Light website, the following 29 rolls will make you eligible:

- Dental Practice

- MoD Fire Service
- MoD Police
- Mountain Rescue

- Royal Marines
- Royal Navy
- Search and Rescue
- Social Care Workers
- Teachers
To prove you’re eligible for the service, you’ll need your work ID or a recent payslip. Registration can also take up to seven days.
Asda sent out an email to its customers earlier this month, informing them of the changes. Devastated shoppers reacted to the news on social media. One said: “Very disappointed in @asda for finishing blue light card discounts.”
A second said: “@asda getting rid of the blue light card scheme is pretty rubbish. Not making me want to carry on shopping with you now. The rewards app has gone downhill a lot.”
A third said: “@asda are to stop rewarding emergency service workers via Blue Light Card from 27th May. That’s a shame.” A fourth said: “Thanks to @Asda removing their Blue Light Card discount I will now have no incentive to shop there instead of Sainsbury’s or Tesco.”
