Plumber’s simple ‘all you need’ tip for unblocking your sink – no chemicals needed

By staff26 May 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

A plumber has revealed a natural and effective way to clear minor drain blockages – and it only requires one everyday household item that you probably already have.

A plumber has revealed a simpler, safer and utterly natural method for tackling minor drain blockages that doesn’t involve any chemical cleaners. Surprisingly, an item found in most homes could be the fix you’re looking for.

It’s super affordable, highly effective, and comes without any pungent odours or harmful vapours. The plumber’s, secret weapon is none other than boiling water.

“All you need is a kettle or stove, and water straight from your tap,” the expert from Allen Plumbing advised. “Once boiled, simply pour the water down the drain.”

This technique works wonders on small clogs caused by fat, grease, soap, and bits of debris; though, you might have to do it a few times for full effect, reports the Express.

Boiling water isn’t just a quick fix for minor pipe woes, it’s also brilliant for keeping them at bay.

“Regularly pouring boiling water down your sink is a great preventative measure that can help avoid anything accumulating in your pipes,” the plumber suggests.

Should you encounter a more tenacious blockage, there are additional natural remedies to get your drains sparkling clean.

A classic combo of baking soda and white vinegar does the trick – mix equal measures (around half a cup each), tip it down the drain, then seal the opening to trap the effervescent action.

Wait for 15 minutes before flushing with hot water. This concoction excels at dissolving gunk and freshening up your sink.

For tougher blockages, you might need to resort to a plunger to generate the necessary suction and pressure to clear what’s stuck in the pipe.

A drain snake or even a straightened wire coat hanger can serve as useful DIY tools for reaching deeper blockages, particularly those caused by hair in bathroom sinks or showers.

The technique involves carefully twisting or pulling the drain snake to remove the obstruction, but be careful – incorrect use could harm your pipes.

Chemical cleaners should only be considered when all other methods have been exhausted. “Chemical cleaners should be your last resort,” cautions the plumber.

If you’re unsure about how to handle a blocked drain, it’s best to seek professional advice – and remember, your kettle might just be the most effective drain cleaner you have at your disposal.
