John Bishop has spoken out after a car was driven into a crowd of fans during Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations this evening. Emergency services were called to the city centre after a car drove erratically through crowds on Water Street, hitting several people.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that a 53-year-old man has been arrested, while 27 people are said to have been taken to hospital with two people – including one child – seriously injured. Now, comedian John Bishop has addressed the horrific incident on social media after being present at the parade earlier in the day.

Writing on Instagram, John said: “I was at the parade today with my dad and like everyone else I am shocked and heartbroken about the events at the end of the Liverpool parade.”

Bishop added his sympathies for those involved stating: “My heart goes out to all those affected. Our anthem could not be more appropriate You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Since the incident, the police urged people “not to speculate on the circumstances” of the crash in a statement. They added: “We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

“We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784. Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool FC took to their social media account to comment on the incident, writing: “We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”

Dave Kitchin from North West Ambulance Service confirmed tonight that 20 people were treated at the scene of the incident, with four children in total injured. Four people were trapped underneath a vehicle, including three adults and one child.

Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said that the incident wasn’t being treated as terrorism by police.
