‘We went on our first couple’s holiday – my boyfriend’s habit has given me the ick’

By staff29 May 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

A woman has explained how she got the ick during a trip away to Lake Garda with her partner who had different ideas than her about how best to enjoy the holiday

A woman has been urged to ‘throw her boyfriend back’ into the metaphorical pond due to his behaviour on holiday.

Going on holiday as a couple for the first time can be difficult. You’ve woken up at 4am to get a Ryanair flight, meaning the day has begun bleary-eyed with a certain air of crabbiness. One half of the couple has yet to reach payday, meaning their taste in restaurants is a little less fancy. Or, as in the case of one despairing commenter on Mumsnet, you want to do completely different things.

The woman explained how it was their first holiday together, to Garda, following a year of dating. Things got off to a bad start when he flopped down on the hotel room bed as soon as they arrived at 3pm and hadn’t budged two hours later.

“At around 5pm I said ‘you ready to go out?’ And he laughed and said ‘no! We’ve only just got here!’ I said ‘I just mean a walk?’ The lake was literally across the road from hotel. He said ‘oh no, can’t be arsed with that tonight, I just want food and bed.’ It was 5pm!!”

The unhappy girlfriend decided to have wander by herself, only to find her man sulking and irritable when she returned at 6.30pm. When he explained that he was starving, she told him there was a grocery shop down the road.

The following day turned out to be no better. In fact, the woman was up for almost six hours before her boyfriend got out of bed. Even brewing him two coffees couldn’t get the slumbering beau up and out.

“He asked for another coffee – I said he could make himself one as I’d made him two already that had been wasted. He started whinging so I said ‘It’s almost lunch time, I’m bored and I’m going out, are you coming?’ He said he just wanted to relax around the hotel today and use the pool.

“Fine. I went out and hired a bike, spent all afternoon visiting the little towns. Got back at 5pm – he’s still in bed playing on his phone. I said ‘Did you use the pool?’ So he said ‘On my own? No! I was waiting for you to come back!’.”

The woman decided a discussion was needed with her partner about the following day’s plans – a trip to Verona. The boyfriend agreed and said he was still up for it.

“The next day arrived – same scenario. Numerous cups of coffee gone cold, me sat around bored, getting on for lunch time he’s still asleep. I snapped in the end and said Are you actually going to do anything on this holiday?? I’m going to Verona at 12pm. Remember we said we’d set off at 10am?? Half a day wasted already’. He reluctantly got up, saying it’s meant to be a holiday to relax etc.

“We got to Verona at 2pm. As soon as we got there he was nattering about food saying he’d not eaten all day. He had no interest in seeing any sights, just wanted to sit and eat. We managed to see the museum and that was it.

“The whole holiday was like this. It’s given me the ick. Laziness.”

Unsurprisingly, the mums of Mumsnet were not overly sympathetic with the boyfriend. “Really good way to find out that you are not compatible. Throw this one back,” one suggested.

Another added: “This would annoy the hell out of me . I am not one of those people who goes on holiday to just sit around the pool never mind sleeping in the room . What’s the point ? You could’ve stayed at home to do that . I would be dumping him at the airport on the return home. You both have different ideas of holidays.”

And a third wrote: “Ew. That would be it for me as I definitely could not ever have sex with him again.”
