Nick Kyrgios issues heartfelt apology as he reveals he WON’T be at Wimbledon

2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has not played at the tournament since 2022 and has confirmed that he will also not be appearing at the latest iteration as his injury woes continue

Nick Kyrgios has confirmed that he WON’T play at Wimbledon this year as his injury woes continue. The 30-year-old has been suffering from a knee issue over the past few months.

He was meant to return to action during the French Open doubles but a recurrence of the issue ruled him out. And Kyrgios has now announced that he will not play at Wimbledon later this summer.

Taking to Instagram, the Australian wrote: “I’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately I won’t make it back for grass season this year. I know how much you’ve been looking forward to seeing me out there and I’m genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever.”

Kyrgios’ last appearance at Wimbledon came in 2022 as he surprisingly reached the final only to be defeated by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. His other highlight includes reaching the quarter-finals on debut way back in 2014.

Kyrgios’ injury issues have continued to cause major problems since then – his only appearance at a major tournament being his first round exit at this year’s Australian Open. Speaking after that exit, he confirmed he wouldn’t return to his homeland to play singles.

He said: “Realistically, I can’t really see myself playing singles match here again. I was knocking on the door from playing some of the biggest events … winning some of the biggest events.

“When you’re competing for the biggest tournaments in the world and you’re struggling to win sets, physically, it’s pretty tough. It’s just not enjoyable for me.”

On the topic of potential retirement, he added: “My journey is not over, but I’ve had an amazing journey. My career’s been amazing. I don’t have any regrets.

“I think everything has been a learning curve for me. I continue to try and have fun, just be real, and enjoy the ride. But I think it would be selfish for me to say that I want more. I’ve had a lot of success. More than most athletes would have. All my focus now is just not taking anything for granted.”

Away from his career on the court, it appears that Kyrgios has already begun giving thought to his post-tennis career. He appeared on the BBC for the 2024 edition of Wimbledon where he served as a commentator and analyst, while he commentated on the men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. He was then handed a similar role with American channel ESPN at the 2024 US Open.
