Warning to anyone with an air fryer over using this popular £2.75 kitchen item

By staff4 June 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

People have been urged to immediately stop making this common mistake when using an air fryer to make their meals – and it’s all about using the spraying oil correctly.

Air fryers have revolutionised the way we cook, making delicious meals with minimal effort and half of the time it would take using traditional cooking methods. However, there’s one common big mistake that people are making.

The air fryer has become a kitchen staple for many, as per the latest data available, 45% of UK households now own an air fryer. Hence why a warning has been announced to ensure that these appliances last for as long as possible.

According to AO’s small appliance expert, Isabella Forgione, there’s one thing people should stop doing immediately. Have you ever wondered why your air fryer has started making weird noises or the food is not being cooked properly?

This warning comes after popular coating sprays were found to contain additives and propellants. Over time, these can affect the air fryer’s interior, which can lead to it breaking down – and no one likes to see their number one kitchen appliance stop working!

She said: “The biggest mistake people make is misusing oil and cooking sprays. Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the food, so technically, you don’t need oil to cook. But if you’re after that golden, crispy finish, a little oil can go a long way if used correctly.”

How to use oil to improve your air fryer meal

The expert is recommending users to apply oil or cooking spray directly to the oil, instead of spraying the inside of the air fryer. This will ensure that the food is properly cooked, by also giving it that extra delicious crisp. Isabella explained: “This helps crisp up items like vegetables or breaded snacks without damaging the non-stick coating.”

By doing so, it will reduce the amount of oil touching the air fryer device directly, protecting the non-stick coating from being affected and potentially damaged. She also recommended users to double check the ingredients of the spray as some of them can cause damage over time.

Last but not least, Isabella also urged people to clean their air fryers thoroughly every time after each use. By following these simple instructions, your air fryer will last for a long, long time – and the food will also taste much better.
