Gardeners urged to complete 3 simple tasks in June for a stunning outdoor space all summer long

June is the perfect time to give your garden a bit of love and attention to ensure it’s looking its best all summer long

Summer has arrived, and if you’re dreaming of a blooming garden ready for picnics and barbecues, now’s the time to get cracking. To create an enchanting outdoor area that’s perfect for gatherings with loved ones, there’s a fair bit of grafting to do, reports the Express.

Paul Smythe, the brains behind Gower Composite Decking and Carpentry, suggests that June, July, and August are prime months not just for basking in your garden but also for sprucing it up. He shared: “The summer months are the peak time to spend time relaxing and entertaining in your outdoor space, so my tips will help you make it look its best.

“It’s also important to continue to consider wildlife as well as planting so you can make the most of your garden all year round.”

Planting

Now’s the prime moment to start planting. Paul advised: “It’s a great time to sow seeds and plant young plants as air and soil temperatures are rising, so plants will get off to a good start.

“Think about nasturtiums and night-scented stocks while, for vegetables, June is a good month to plant pak choi, spring onions, broccoli and pumpkins.”

As the mercury climbs, keeping on top of garden upkeep is crucial. Regular weeding and watering become even more essential during the summer months as conditions turn drier.

Garden maintenance

As the days get warmer, it’s important to make sure you’re on top of garden chores too. Things like weeding and watering are important tasks year-round, but especially in the summer as the weather gets drier.

It’s also a good idea to start thinking about protecting your fruit and vegetables from pests and start feeding your tomatoes for optimal growth.

Consider wildlife

For those looking to maintain a vibrant and wildlife-friendly garden during the hot summer months, consider the needs of your local fauna.

Paul advises: “Remember to keep your bird bath topped up in anticipation of the dry and warm weather, or consider creating a cool, damp area for amphibians. Lawn flowers not only look attractive but also provide a source of nectar and pollen for bees.”
