If you’re fed up of looking at your ugly garden fence, there’s an easy way to brighten it up and make your garden pop with colour. This simple and fast growing climbing plant is perfect for those who don’t have hours to potter around the garden and plant lots of flowers.

Called the trumpet vine, this easy to grow plant is catching keen gardeners’ eyes as it grows seriously quick as well as blooming with gorgeous bright and colourful leaves and all homeowners are urged to try.

Nicknamed the ‘hummingbird vine’ thanks to its bright, trumpet-shaped flowers, it is a magnet for hummingbirds with bright blood orange or red colours that contrast well to the deep green leaves. As it’s a natural climbing plant it will grow all over your fence, covering up the dull panels – or gaps that allow your neighbours to see in.

Alternatively it can be planted to grow up trellises, sheds or even walls to give a stunning flower display with minimal effort and you don’t have to wait long for the results either. Within just a few weeks you can expect to see the bright blooming flowers, so you can sit back in your garden this summer and be proud of your work.

You can grow it straight from the seed, but you can also buy young plants from a garden centre. These plants love sunshine with a bit of shelter from strong winds, and as soon as it starts to grow it’s pretty low maintenance, just needing some water and a good area to grow on.

If you have already planted all of your plants and wondering how to water them during a heatwave, experts have shared their tops on the perfect watering times while it’s hot. Simon, a horticulture expert from the popular gardening channel Walking Talking Gardeners, has shared a “genius” tip to ensure that all those precious pot plants don’t dry out.

He advises that container-grown plants should be watered consistently, regardless of recent rainfall, but this becomes doubly crucial during a heatwave.

However overwatering a plant can be harmful too, potentially causing root rot, leaf discolouration and stunted growth. Very wet soil can also create an environment for mould and fungus growth, further harming the plant.

So if you have plants in terracotta pots, he explained: “You would be familiar with terracotta pots and the sound it makes If it is dry. If you tap it with an appropriate stick, the pot will make a ringing sound.

“If it is fully-watered, it would have a dull kind of thud to it. So just by tapping a pot you’ll be able to tell if that pot requires watering or does not require watering.” He added with a touch of pride that it’s a display of some “old-school skill.”
