TUI urges anyone packing one tiny item in hand luggage to remove it at the airport

By staff19 June 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

TUI is advising passengers to avoid packing one common item in their hand luggage that is banned from carry to and from the US. But if you do need to pack it, here’s how.

You may need to part ways with this one everyday item at the airport if you don’t pack it properly, advises TUI. The travel provider has outlined all the items you cannot carry on its flights or cruises, including one common accessory.

TUI has specific guidance when it comes to carrying lighters and matches in hand luggage. According to the carrier, passengers can take a small lighter through security as hand luggage – with one small catch.

Passengers flying to and from the US are not permitted to carry lighters in their hand luggage as they are banned. If you are travelling with a trusty lighter though, TUI provides further guidance on how it should be packed.

Keep in mind that your lighter will be part of your liquid allowance and thus, needs to be either packed in a resealable plastic bag or handed over separately for screening by security agents.

After security screening, travellers will need to keep the lighter in their pocket for safety – it cannot be packed in your cabin bag. Additionally, travellers should never pack lighters or matches in checked-in baggage says TUI.

Under the same Luggage Guidelines section, TUI outlines a full range of items that passengers should not carry in their hand luggage – many of which are commonplace items like scissors.

The travel provider also outlines comprehensive guidance when it comes to the packing and carrying of liquids, foods and powders. According to TUI: “Food items and powders in your hand luggage can obstruct images on x-ray machines.”

For this reason, your hand luggage may need to be checked again manually by security. You can put food and powders in your hold luggage to minimise delays. When it comes to liquids, the 100mL limit is still in play across airports throughout the UK.

TUI advises passengers that liquids need to be packed in containers of no more than 100ml carried in a clear, resealable plastic bag with a maximum size of 20cm x 20cm, or that can hold up to 1 litre.

All containers should fit comfortably in the plastic bag which should stay completely closed. You will need to ensure all containers are also easily visible. TUI says you need to provide the plastic bag yourself but these can often be found at designated stations near security.

When you get to security, you’ll need to remove the plastic bag from your hand luggage – it gets screened separately. Any liquids in containers bigger than this need to be packed in your checked-in luggage. Travellers will be able to carry medical and dietary liquids over 100ml, but need to bring a doctor’s letter to show at security.

Any liquids you buy from duty free must be carried in a sealed security bag which are provided during the time of purchase. Travellers need to keep the item and the receipt sealed in the security bag throughout the journey.

Security officers might still need to open the bag to screen the item. So if you are taking a connecting flight at your destination, let the security officer know and they will reseal the item in a new security bag.
