Police arrest footage of murder suspect Roy Barclay

A video shows the moment a man accused of murdering a mum-of-six was arrested by police.

Roy Barclay, 56, was arrested nearly three months after Anita Rose, 57, died in Brantham, Suffolk. He was arrested in Ipswich Library. A court heard he had spent years living “off grid” to avoid a recall to prison

Ipswich Crown Court heard Ms Rose died four days after being subjected to a “vicious and brutal attack” with “numerous, kicks, stamps and blows” to her face, head and body as she walked her dog. Barclay has denied murdering the mum-of-six. The police footage released by the Crown Prosecution Service shows the moment officers arrested Barclay in the public library on October 21.

In the video, an officer can be seen approaching the defendant, who is currently on trial, and reading him his rights.

During Barclay’s trial on Monday, prosecutors told the court he was jailed 10 years ago after he admitted beating an 82-year-old-man who caught him rummaging for pizza in bins.

At the time of Ms Rose’s death, Barclay had been sleeping rough in a makeshift camp near to where she walked her dog, the court was told. The jury heard Ms Rose’s distinctive pink jacket, phone case and back door key were found in the camp in Brantham, and her Samsung earbuds were found in another camp under the Orwell Bridge.

The court also heard paramedics who were called to the scene found her dog lead had been tightly wrapped round her leg. Ms Rose, from Brantham, Suffolk, left her house at approximately 5am on July 24 to take her springer spaniel named Bruce for a walk.

She was found by a member of the public lying unconscious on Rectory Lane and emergency services were called to a track near to Rectory Lane in Brantham at 6.30am.

Christopher Paxton KC, prosecuting, suggested Barclay was drawn to the sewage works to use a toilet and wash basin and might have been seen entering or leaving by Ms Rose. The fatal assault could have been because he feared she might report him or as a reaction to something she might have said, he added.

The trial continues.
