Tourist trapped in active volcano found dead after frantic rescue effort

Juliana Marins, a tourist from Brazil, was on a trek to climb Indonesia’s Rinjani volcano when she is believed to have fallen inside and her family has now said her body has been found

A tourist who was trapped for days after falling into an active volcano has tragically been found dead four days later, despite a frantic rescue effort.

Distressing footage showed Juliana Marins after she fell from one of the most dangerous hiking paths in the world into the 12,000-foot-high active volcano. The 26 year old had been on a trek to scale Indonesia’s Rinjani volcano when she slipped and plunged nearly 1,000 feet down the peak last Saturday about 6.30am. Her family confirmed her death on social media, writing: “Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was.

With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”

Juliana is claimed to have been stopped and waited on a trek led by guide Ali Mustafa after saying she was too tired to go on. Ms Marins who worked as a publicist and pole dancer, reportedly screamed as she lost her footing.

When the guide returned with the other five hikers Juliana had gone but the hikers then saw her where she had landed and was unable to climb back up. Drone footage shot by another tour group shows her stranded in the volcano apparently stuck fast in a crevasse unable to free herself.

She was looking confused and dazed and apparently able to move just her arms and her torso with her legs curled at a strange angle as the film ends. She was wearing just jeans, a T-shirt, gloves, and trainers despite the altitude and intense cold. Rescuers’ attempts to reach Juliana were abandoned on June 22 after fog reduced visibility to near zero, local authorities reported.

Yesterday, a tour guide said that the woman was spotted again further down the slope and rescue teams were struggling in difficult conditions due to the terrain and thick fog. Her family in Niteroi, eastern Brazil, deny Indonesian claims that they had been able to airdrop food and clothing to her.

Instead they said a botched rescue bid was abandoned over the weekend when a helicopter crew realised the rope they had was too short. The Instagram page resgatejulianamarins set up by her family and giving updates revealed that she had died.

It had previously said that experienced local mountaineers were heading to join the search. It stated “We have confirmed information that two well-experienced mountaineers from the area are headed to the scene of Juliana’s crash.

“We don’t have information on whether they will be able to continue the rescue operation overnight, but we do know that there is good backup with specialized equipment to accompany crews already on site.”

Brazil’s foreign ministry said in a statement during the search: “Since being alerted by her family, the Brazilian embassy in Jakarta has mobilised local authorities at the highest level.
