UK households with lawnmowers issued urgent act now warning – before July

By staff26 June 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

UK households urged to avoid this common practice to ensure the well-being of their gardens during the upcoming summer months, as temperatures are set to break records.

Maintaining the perfect lawn and an organised and tidy outdoor space is important, especially now that the heatwave is gracing us with hours of sunshine.

However, gardeners have been warned to keep tabs on their lawnmower in the summertime. Which? experts say there are certain things that all gardeners must do to avoid damaging their pricey lawnmowers – and it’s all to do with what can be problem grass clippings and debris.

A lawnmower is a gardener’s best friend and is used far more in June than it is in the winter. It’s a must-have item for any household with a lawn. But gardeners whipping out their garden tool without checking for accumulation could be doing more harm than good.

The site explained: “Allowing grass clipping and debris to accumulate after mowing can significantly reduce your mower’s performance, and even spread lawn diseases.”

Although debris can enhance soil fertility and improve water retention, it can also impose some risks that can affect the overall health of the plants and flowers.

“Clean your mower after every use or, at the very least, once a month. Use a wire brush or a damp cloth to scrape away any debris. Keeping it clean ensures consistent performance and prolongs its lifespan,” they added.

In terms of storage, gardeners simply have to keep it away from any wet space, such as the shed or the garage. Most importantly, it’s crucial to wipe it after every use, with the cable area being completely dry beforehand.

The best time to mow your lawn

The best time to mow your garden is mid-morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are not too hot, as previously reported by the Mirror.

Although mowing the lawn will become more frequent during the summertime, there are specific times when it’s best to complete such task. As the temperatures keep increasing and the rays of the sun are much stronger, the grass becomes more fragile.

In need of more nutrients and water, the grass needs more care and attention, compared to other seasons. Ideally, the best time to mow the lawn is between 8 am and 10 am or a couple of hours before sunset when the sun isn’t as strong and the grass is dry.

By following these simple tips, gardeners can rest assured that their lawnmowers will be safe for use and working for as long as possible – especially now during the heatwave!
