Britain will be hit with a number of heatwaves in the coming weeks, with temperatures rising to 38C in some areas of the country as we enter the first full week of July
Brits could see temperatures reaching highs of a scorching 38C in the coming weeks as the UK continues to bake in the scorching heat.
Following an extremely hot weekend where temperatures hit 33.2C in Charlwood, Surrey, the UK could face another wave of heat next month, according to the latest weather maps. WXCharts maps have turned a volcanic red when looking at Wednesday, July 9 with most areas of the country experiencing highs of 35C to 37C. Astonishingly, the West Midlands is likely to see the hottest temperatures, with areas such as Birmingham, Worcester, Derby, Nottingham and Mansfield potentially reaching a scorching 38C.
Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds will experience highs of 37C while Newcastle will see highs of 32C. At midday on July 9, the mercury in London, Surrey and Kent is expected to have already reached 36C. By 6pm temperatures will have increased even further in most areas of the country, while temperatures will be over 30C in the majority of places at midnight, potentially making it uncomfortable to sleep.
Parts of the south west will see the coolest temperatures of around 25C, while similar temperatures could be seen in parts of the north west. Temperatures in Dublin are expected to reach a maximum of 25C throughout the day, reports Daily Express.
According to the Met Office, the oncoming heatwave will peak into the early part of next week and will likely bring the highest temperatures of the year so far to the UK. Mike Silverstone, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Higher temperatures building over the weekend and into early next week will bring particularly warm, hot or even very hot conditions for some, especially in the southeast and East Anglia and more locally elsewhere in England and east Wales.
“This in part will be influenced by a heatwave developing across western Europe.” He added: “By the weekend, an area of high pressure will be intensifying and dominating the UK forecast. Conditions will be hottest in the south and east while areas further north and northwest will be relatively cooler.”
The UK Health Security Agency has issued Amber and Yellow Heat-Health Alerts for most areas of the UK starting at 12pm on Friday, June 27. They will be in place until 6pm on Tuesday, July 1. An amber heat health alert will be in place across the East Midlands, East of England, London, South East and South West, while a yellow heat health alert has been issued for Yorkshire and The Humber and the West Midlands.
Mr Silverstone said: “Monday could see temperatures reach around 34C in some parts, though we will be able to be more precise closer to the time. The heat is most likely to gradually relent from the west on Tuesday and into Wednesday, with a return towards more average temperatures for the second half of next week.”
Brits are being warned to stay safe as scorching temperatures are likely to impact health and social care services, which could see a rise in deaths, particularly among vulnerable groups such as those over the age of 65 or with health conditions. The health agency warns of several other factors to look out for during the upcoming scorcher, including:
- likely increased demand on all health and social care services
- temperatures inside hospitals and care homes may exceed the recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment
- the heat affecting the ability of the workforce to deliver services
- indoor environments overheating increasing the risk to vulnerable people living alone in community and care settings
- issues managing medicines
- staffing issues due to external factors (for example, affecting transport)
- increased demand for power exceeding capacity
- other sectors starting to observe impacts (for example, travel delays)
