Superdrug has confirmed it is closing one of its high street stores. The health and beauty retailer is shutting its Redruth store in Cornwall on August 16.

The store is located on Fore Street and affected staff will be offered jobs at other Superdrug locations where possible. Superdrug has over 800 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland, including around 200 in-store pharmacies.

One disappointed shopper took to social media to say: “That’s sad. The staff in there are lovely, very friendly and helpful.” Another said: “This is so sad… always go there over Boots.”

A third person commented: “It’s a terrible shame.” Another said: “This is so sad to see. I worked there in the late 90s/2000 and was involved when the pharmacy first opened there, it was a lovely place to work. Hope all the staff find new jobs.”

A spokesperson for Superdrug said: “We can confirm that our Superdrug store in Redruth will be closing and is due to take place on Friday 16th August. This branch will continue to trade until this date.

“All staff members affected will be carefully supported and we will look to redeploy to nearby branches where possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this closure may cause and sincerely thank our customers for their support.

“Our customers can visit our nearest branches at Camborne, Truro, Falmouth, and Helston or shop our great product offering on Superdrug.com.”

Superdrug is also set to close its store in Grantham in Lincolnshire on August 9. One shopper shared the news on Facebook, writing: “Heard the sad news today that Superdrug will be closing down. Been in Grantham for over 40 years. This town is dying.”

Another shopper replied, saying: “It’s happening everywhere everyone is buying online there won’t be any towns left soon. It a shame but most of us do it.“

In more retail news, Poundland has confirmed it will close 68 stores after the struggling retailer was sold for £1 to investment firm Gordon Brothers, the former owner of Laura Ashley.

On top of this, the budget chain wants to close its distribution centre at Darton, South Yorkshire and its national distribution centre at Bilston in the West Midlands in early 2026.

Poundland will also seek rent reductions at a number of other stores, will stop selling frozen food, and its website will stop taking orders, although shoppers will still be able to browse products and deals online.

The restructuring plan, which would put more than 1,000 jobs at risk, would need to be approved by the High Court before it can go ahead.
