Ban bugs and spiders from your home with B&M’s £5 item

As the weather gets warmer, insects end up invading our homes through open windows and doors – but there’s a cheap solution

As the summer heat ramps up, British homes can quickly turn into mini greenhouses. Opening windows and doors for relief might offer some relief, until you hear a faint but familiar buzzing like an army of insects.

Warmer weather spells lead to increased activity for bugs, who are desperately scavenging for extra food to support their energy needs, explaining why they crash in our homes. In America, bug screens are a household staple to fend off these intruders, but you’re less likely to find them in the UK.

Rather than shopping for a permanent fix that will probably only be worthwhile for a few months out of the year, Brits can grab a cost-effective solution from B&M that’ll help ban any bugs from visiting without an invite. The discount store is offering two screen options: an insect-repelling window cover for £3 and a door screen for £5.

Both are meant to ensure your home stays airy without the interruption of a bug invasion. The packaging promises easy installation for various door types, including sliding ones.

The window screen can be trimmed for a snug fit, allowing fresh air in, but keeping creepy crawlies out, reports the Liverpool Echo. B&M says: “Keep fresh air in and bugs out with this Easy Fit Insect Window Screen.”

TikTok users, like @Zayreeshh, who tried both the door and window version, have been showing off their insect-free homes on the platform, with one claiming to the camera: “This is a must to keep all the insects, bugs and spiders out of your house!”

One person said: “I have indoor cats and I was wondering what I’m going to do in the summer with needing my windows open. This is genius!” Another added: “Thank you for your service!” and a thrid wrote: “I need these now!”.

Yet, some had their doubts, like one who warned people: “They’re rubbish unless you duct tape them too, otherwise they’re brill!” And another shared: “I tried it last year but it kept peeling off when I needed to open the window!”

How else can I keep insects out of the house this summer?

According to the Manchester Evening News, pest control authority Jonathan Nicholls from HomeHow.co.uk has revealed some key measures people should take to keep uninvited bugs at bay, and they involve more than just installing fly screens. It’s about focusing on preventing entry, rather than swatting the nuisances away.

In addition to insect screens, there are several strategies to deter the pesky critters. Eliminating potential attractants, such as leftover food, could prove beneficial.

Relocating wheelie bins further from house windows is another savvy step – after all, these act as a magnet for flies and provide perfect breeding sites. You can learn all nine expert tips by clicking here.
