Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman loves ‘chicken Tikka masala’ and Sunday roasts after four years in UK

England Women’s manager Sarina Wiegman has opening up about her favourite British grub and how she likes to relax at the Euros, after four years with the Lionesses

Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman has revealed that she loves a chicken Tikka masala from British takeaways, after joining England four years ago. The England manager, who joined the Lionesses in 2021, also said she can’t resist a Sunday roast and had never tried one before landing in Britain.

Asked what she’s come to love about England during her tenure, the Dutch 55-year-old told reporters: “I like the Sunday roasts. I’d never had that before I came here.

“I actually like Indian food. The chicken Tikka masala is pretty good too. That’s not typical English, but I really like it. It’s in the English culture.”

Sarina, who has flown her children, husband and father to Switzerland to enjoy the tournament also told how she prefers to spend her downtime between games switching off with family. She said: “I really enjoy my coffee so that is a non-negotiable.

“Where we are is really beautiful. Around the hotel there is a little forest, it’s fresh and nice. When you can switch off a little bit you can go out, it’s really nice.

“My family sees all of the countries where we have tournaments, they see more than I do. “My husband is there, my kids are in and out, my dad always comes as well when I know they are there and they are having a good time and enjoying themselves, for me that is enough. We’ll just have a little coffee from time to time and for me that’s enough.”

And as the 24-hour countdown to the Lionesses’ first match against France begins on Friday, the excitement is building at England’s basecamp and across the nation. Sarina added: “You can feel the excitement that we are so close to the tournament.”

A barmy army of fans are set to descend on the streets of Zurich, with most English ticket holders having flown in today. The city fan park and village will be showing all the tournament games for those fans who have made the journey to Switzerland without a ticket.

But thousands more will be roaring on the girls in the stands of the 30,930-seater Letzigrund stadium when the match kicks off at 8pm BST on Saturyda night. Following the tragic death of Portuguese national and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota, a minute’s silence will be held before all Women’s Euros fixtures today and tomorrow.

The Lionesses joined football legends from across the sports industry in paying tribute by sharing photographs of the 28-year-old on social media.
