Potatoes will stay sprout-free for ‘months’ by storing them in unusual spot

By staff4 July 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Potatoes can be cooked in so many ways, but one thing that can ruin them is sprouting, which could be prevented by storing them in an unusual kitchen location

Potatoes, known for their versatility in being mashed, baked, fried, boiled, roasted and more, can also end up as a source of food waste if not stored correctly. Wheeldon Brothers, waste management experts, advise an easy tip that can keep potatoes fresh for “months”.

They said: “Storing potatoes with an apple helps prevent sprouting and keeps them fresher for longer. It’s an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last.” This nifty method, which has seen a rise in popularity on social media platforms, utilises the ethylene gas released naturally by apples.

The specialist noted: “Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes.” For optimal preservation, they recommend combining this technique with ideal storage conditions, suggesting a cool, dark and dry place, reports the Express.

In contrast to the traditional practice of using a cupboard or pantry, experts are now advocating the use of the fridge to prolong freshness, claiming it can enhance longevity “up to three times longer”.

They clarify: “Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, and modern research shows that fridge storage is safe.”

However, vigilance is key as the expert continues: “It’s important to regularly check potatoes for sprouting or green patches, as these can contain harmful toxins.”

Heeding the warning that sprouted or green potatoes must be avoided due to potential toxicity, they counsel proper storage and frequent checks for spoilage signs to maintain prime condition of potatoes.

Another method to prolong their freshness is to avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and accelerate spoilage.
