‘I’m a flight attendant and there are five clothing items I’d never wear on plane’

A flight attendant has shared five things you should never wear on a plane – and some people have been left wondering why you wouldn’t want to wear these items

If you’re the type of traveller who prides themselves on stepping off the plane looking as sharp as when they boarded, you’re in good company. The trend for ‘airport outfits’ has taken off, with high-street fashion retailers showcasing matching loungewear and chic shorts that are all the rage for jet-setters.

However, a seasoned flight attendant has issued a style alert, cautioning against certain fashion choices based on her extensive experience in the skies. “Your outfit might be cute at the gate, but at 38,000 feet? Not so much. Here’s what I’d never fly in and why,” @sillerydell shared in her social media post.

1. Shorts or crop tops

Shorts and crop tops may look adorable when you’re in the queue waiting for your flight, but she warned that the “wrath of AC on bare thighs or naked belly” is too much, so it’s best to keep as covered up as possible.

There have been instances where passengers were barred from boarding due to attire considered overly revealing.

2. Flip flops

Another common mistake, according to the cabin crew member, is to wear flip flops. In emergency situations, this footwear really isn’t practical.

Plus, it’s tempting to slip them off. The frequent flyer added: “I know you will take them off during the flight and walk barefoot.”

This may not seem like a big deal, but it can lead to you treading into something really unpleasant – especially in the toilets.

3. Polyester and synthetic materials

In the rare case of an emergency, these materials can pose a greater fire risk and potentially melt onto the skin under intense heat.

Trendy polyester ensemble may be tempting, but it’s wise to pass on it for safety’s sake.

4. Tights

The flight attendant warned that tights will also be extremely flammable and may “burn into your skin”, especially because of how tight to your leg they are.

While such emergencies are thankfully very rare, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

5. Tight, non-stretchy clothes

While tight clothes can look flattering, they’re often not very comfy.

The cabin crew member gave a heads-up: “Your body bloats in the air. What feels snug on the ground might feel like a corset in the sky”.

So what should you actually wear on board? The key is go for practical and comfortable attire. You should also come prepared for different conditions.

They concluded that it’s crucial to “choose comfort, safety, and layers you can easily remove or add”.

The cabin crew member suggested always having a hoodie at the ready for both going and returning, which can help to get you through air con and drizzly conditions upon landing.
