Met Office issues thunderstorm warning as 3 regions face lightning and floods

By staff6 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning to three parts of the UK – residents have been told the areas could face lightning and flash flooding this weekend

The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for three parts of the UK as some areas face floods and lightning.

Forecasters say severe weather on Sunday could lead to travel disruptions. A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for parts of the East Midlands, the East of England and Yorkshire & Humber. The Met Office said this warning is expected to be in place from 7am tomorrow until 7pm the same day. The agency warned flooding and lightning strikes could be possible and might lead to building damage.

Specific areas set to be affected by the strong weather are: Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Peterborough, Suffolk, East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire.

The Met Office warned these thunderstorms could make travel difficult, saying there is “a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.”

Locals have also been told that there is a chance train services could be delayed and there is a risk of some short term loss of power and other services.

The Met Office said: “Thunderstorms are expected to occur during Sunday, initially in the west of the region but spreading east through the morning. These will bring heavy rain, lightning and some hail.

“Within the warning area, 15-25 mm of rain is expected quite widely, much of this falling within two or three hours at any given place. Where repeated thunderstorms occur, locally higher peaks of 40-60 mm are possible.”

The Met Office also advised people to check road conditions as well as bus and train timetables tomorrow to avoid travel issues.

People in areas at risk of flash flooding have been advised to prepare a flood plan and have an emergency kit on hand. The Met Office even revealed a list of the crucial items Brits should set aside in their emergency kits.

It said: “In your flood kit have: insurance and any other important documents; a torch & spare batteries; a first aid kit, prescription medicines and supplies for looking after your family members or pets; and warm, waterproof clothes, blankets, food and water.”

The Met Office added: “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”

  • Cambridgeshire

  • Norfolk
